Norwegian firm reveals slew of enhancements in version 10.6

Opera Software has released the final version of its 10.60 browser and claims that the fastest browser on Earth is now 50 per cent quicker than its previous release.

Opera attributes its increased speed in part to its Opera Turbo feature, which compresses data travelling over internet connections by up to a factor of two or more.

The new browser also offers improved features. Its AppCache allows users to run web-based applications such as word processors and spreadsheets without an internet connection.

Opera has included a Speed Dial feature to quickly connect users to their favourite sites, and built-in video playback that lets consumers view video within the browser.

Search enhancements include instant search suggestions when using sites such as Wikipedia, and a greater choice of search engines included in the browser.

Opera claims to have 120 million active users connecting to the web using PCs, mobile phones and other networked devices.

Latest monthly statistics from Net Applications, which aggregates data from 40,000 web site worldwide, showed that in June Opera was the fifth most popular search engine, with a 2.93 per cent market share for Opera and Opera Mini combined.

The same statistics show that Opera popularity has remained steady for the first half of this year, consistently hovering around the three per cent mark.

Its nearest rivals are Safari and Google Chrome, which in June had a 4.85 per cent and 7.24 per cent share of the market respectively. Opera still has a long way to go if it wants to rival the dominant browser - last month Internet Explorer had a 60.32 per cent market share.

I am usually not one to go with synthetic tests and benchmarks... but please, do take a look at these amazing numbers, from the browsers installed on my system. I find Opera 10.60 pretty amazing speed wise, although I like it's other features also. I recommend you go for some testing yourself, maybe someone would let us know how fast Opera 10.60 is against Chrome or IE 9...

All on the same system (tested over several months). Firefox 3.6.6 is missing, but that should be the same as 3.6.4.

But I still use the highly personalized Firefox.

Nice testing H3rby. So it's indeed the fastest... I'm glad for Opera, they deserve this win. I also have a personalize Firefox on my system, but don't browse in it ever, because I became so used and happy with Opera (use it from version 5-6 I think). Basically my Firefox and IE are just for reference so I can test my websites are looking good on all major browsers... Maybe in the future, if needed, I'll install Chrome or Safari - but I never had a client objecting their site would not look well on browsers other than IE or Firefox - yet. And I also have the Adobe BrowserLab - at least for 1 year...

Firefox is powerful and easily customizable, but maintaining more than one profile is troublesome.

I'm now using Opera on my non-primary machines. It gets most features that I need.

I think the only reason I was a vivid firefox user is because I loved the addons, but then I noticed that all of the functionality is there too with Opera.

I don't regret the change.

I like Opera but until it can support addons (especially LastPass) then I won't go back to using it :(

Opera is always claiming some new % performance increase with each new version that they pump out every week. They will reach version 50 by 2011, competing with chrome for version number increases.

Nonethless it still remains an excellent browser.

Opera is my 1'st choice of a browser for such a long time and would have to let me down spectacularly in order to change my preference

BTW instead of bookmarking pages, with 2 clicks you can save them wherever you like (any page; file, save)- nor that I might inform something new, but refreshed some for myself too!

lol

one trend as regarding "browser wars" users worth adding to discussion:

FF fans - they are more of saying about advantages etc; Opera users- just use it and do not voice as much on how, what why...

One more tip- go to tools, appearance, get new themes download and post us back weather you like Z1-Glass
