erRor67
So I plan on installing Linux on my computer.. Im kinda new at this whole "linux" thingie.. and yeah... I looked about the net and found awhole bunch on different versions of Linux(es).. So my question is, what would be a good version of linux to use as a beginner? Then, later on (when i get better), what version of Linux would be good for the above-average user (like more options, better control, etc etc)? No patches etc are released for the "home version" (right around debian, advanced :PRH9 is prolly ~mandrake when it comes to ease of use to be honest :P
erRor67
hmm, im seeing different kinds of versions to download. Like, for Madriva Linux, Im seeing i386, i586, x86-64, and PPC. Which one do i get? Oh, and whats the difference between Mandriva Linux LE2005 and Mandriva Linux 10.1?
ObiWan
the i386, i486, i586 or i686.the versions originally:i386 = Intel 386 and abovei486 = Intel 486 and abovei586 = Pentium and abovei686 = Pentium 2, Pentium 2 Celeron, and aboveolder version work with newer processors ie 386 will work on p4.they also work on AMD proccessors. For AMD, i686 is Athlon, Duron, Sempron, or better.x86-64 is for the new AMD 64 Athlons. Snake
Gentoo, i think, is kind of hard to install(no gui when installing, just text) But ive heard that slackware is good.

StyleWarz
Ubuntu is great... I don't like SuSE and Mandrake, they're like windows but even worse bah... Fedora is ok, but too American... Personally I use Debian GNU/Linux and like that a lot...Mephis Lite might be good for you too, for more look at www.distrowatch.com
Guest cisgms
I would use Xandros or Mepis for a beginner. Extremely easy and pretty compatible.
Guest Negi
You should probably wait for Novell's new Linux distro. It's supposed to be a windows-killer. Also, why does everyone want their system to look like a mac? The dock is fucking retarded and so is the top bar.
