If you use WD Kitfox together with SoftPerfect RAM Disk, be aware of a compatibility issue.

Problem:

KitfoxService gets stuck in START_PENDING (starting) and never starts.

Cause:

If SoftPerfect RAM Disk has Hard Disk Emulation enabled, it appears to Windows as a physical drive. KitfoxService performs RAW access on all physical drives during startup and hangs when it reaches the emulated RAM disk.

Fix:

Disable Hard Disk Emulation:

SoftPerfect RAM Disk → Edit Disk → Uncheck “Hard Disk Emulation” → Reboot

Result:

  • KitfoxService starts normally

  • RAM Disk works normally

  • No performance loss
