jalaffa
VirtualBox is an application installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional operating systems can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment. For example, several Linux distributions can be hosted on a single machine running Windows XP; likewise, XP and Vista can run on a machine running Linux, and so on. There is a free for personal or evaluation use proprietary version and a GNU General Public License (GPL) version.Download

HX1
I have a stupid question, and the reason I have t is because I do not have a lot of disk space to spare but some..BUTWhen you make a VHD and install an OS to it in VB..does it take the actual size for the VHD on disk, or is it smaller? ( Like if I make a VDH that is 125 GB in size will it be 125 GB of disk space needed physically on disk ... )The reason I ask is because I have four I would not mind installing and using.. but I don't want to spend the time and create them.. and not have enough space; I would like to plan out what I need and am going to be using.. Tucker
@ heathThere is an option in vbox that would allow you to choose whether to create a flexible or a fixed sized .VDI file.Just select the former if you are a bit tight with free space (like me) ;)
HX1
Cool .. Thanks.. now I can play around with a few things... But one question still.. If it needs 13 GB or 20 GB in size on VHD .. it will be that exact size on Disk? ( which I am gathering it will be but just asking to make sure.. )
Tucker
In my case, i set the former as storage type with the size 2gb. And my guest OS is XP Performance Dec edition. The OS installation only requires around 600mb, so my VDI file is somewhere around there. ;)
HX1
I see.. so I think I am looking at about 30GB just for OSes.. I was going for untouched XP ( maybe ), Windows 7 Ultimate - which if I copy/clone and do a restore of my own it will be around 30 GB itself ).. Ubuntu and possibly Mandriva.. and I would like to get MacOSX running in VB but I see nothing about it anywhere..( Snow Leopard I think.. it was a version I found that installs to USB, supposedly.. )EDIT: Oh wait.. just remembered that the reason this is not possble is only because it explicitly illegal in Apple User Agreement.. therefore VB can't support it.. Tucker
The default mac OS X install won't work as the mac hardware is not emulated for it to work. The hacked OS X image that installs on some pc's might work. I have no idea really. ;)
