I've gone back to Skype 4.1 because the newer versions (including this one) install an always present icon on the task bar that can't be turned off or removed without exiting Skype. I prefer to have nothing from Skype in the taskbar except when the app is open and being used and to have the Skype icon hidden in the notification area (what used to be called the system tray). I will not be updating to a new version of Skype until Skype comes out with a new version that allows the user to keep Skype off the Taskbar while the program is running in the background.

i had the same problem with skype updates

i re-installed the latest version of directX (Feb 2010)

and re-install skype and No taskbar icon left at all

If you run Skype in Windows Vista compatibility mode you will only have an icon in the system tray.

Same goes for MSN Messenger too.
