A limited edition, “fully functioning VHS tape” version of Alien: Romulus will be available in December.

It’s time to dust off your VCR and clean the heads, because Alien: Romulus is coming to VHS as a limited edition on December 3rd alongside the other physical releases, director Fede Alvarez announced during “a special Beyond Fest-partnered screening” in Los Angeles yesterday.

The “fully functioning VHS tape” is meant to celebrate 45 years since the Alien franchise first (chest) burst into theaters, 20th Century Studios wrote in a release emailed to The Verge. It’ll present the movie, appropriately, in a 4:3 aspect ratio (hopefully without pan-and-scan). It also comes in a slick, vintage-style sleeve.

Has anyone seen my composite cables?

The art for the box comes from Matt Furgeson, whose other work you can see on his website. He posted a wider version of the same image as a poster, which I now desperately want on my wall, a few weeks ago. I’ve embedded that below for your viewing pleasure.

20th Century Studios hasn’t said how many copies of the tape will be available, nor has it provided pricing for the collectible. If you don’t want to wait for the VHS or the other physical releases, though, you can already buy a digital license for Alien: Romulus on a streaming storefront near you.

@Karlston I watched Alien Romulus a few nights ago. I was full of anticipation

having seen all the other Alien movies...the first Alien was brilliantly

original. James Cameron made a fantastic sequel with "Aliens" which

can stand on its own as a great movie. After those two there were

some sequels that didn't come close to the first two movies. So

when Alien Romulus appeared I was full of expectation that they had

come up with something special. But I was wrong, it was a mish-mash of

what we had seen before....and again, (just like Dune), too many dark scenes

that made it difficult to see what was going on. Yes, space is dark...but that

doesn't mean that interior shots of spacecraft etc have to be in gloomy shadows

where you have to peer at the screen to see what's happening. We already know

what the alien and the chest-busters  look like so why hide them in shadows. Did

someone forget to invent the light bulb (the same flaw as in Dune). In the first Alien

movie the chest-buster scene was brightly lit and that added to the shock value as

you could actually see the events unfolding.  I can't understand why the makers of

Alien Romulus thought it was a good idea to hide everything. The best thing about

                   this movie is the poster.:dunno::dunno::dunno:
