"If our world's gonna survive, what matters is what we do now."

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill in Jurassic World Dominion.

Universal Pictures has released a second trailer for Jurassic World Dominion, the sixth installment in the hugely successful franchise, featuring cloned dinosaurs roaming freely on the mainland as human beings face possible extinction.

As we've reported previously, the Jurassic World trilogy was always intended to be a complete story told across three films, as opposed to the standalone nature of the original trilogy. Director Colin Trevorrow, who co-wrote Dominion's script, knew that he wanted the third film to center on dinosaurs going "open source," so to speak—portraying a world in which Wu is not the only scientist capable of cloning the beasts. But rather than scene after scene of dinosaurs terrorizing people and destroying cities, he wanted "a world where dinosaur interaction is unlikely but possible—the same way we watch out for bears or sharks."

Per the official premise:

Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live—and hunt—alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.

The first trailer dropped in February, and fans were thrilled to see Sam Neill's Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern's Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Jeff Goldblum's suave, black-clad Dr. Ian Malcolm prominently featured alongside Jurassic World co-stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. We haven't seen Neill's or Dern's characters since 2001's Jurassic Park III. And they're major players in Dominion, not just stars making brief, fan-pleasing cameos.

Also returning for Dominion: Daniella Pineda as dino veterinarian Zia Rodriguez; Justice Smith as park technician Franklin Webb; Isabella Sermon as Maisie; Omar Sy as Owen's assistant Barry; and B.D. Wong as geneticist Dr. Henry Wu. New cast members include DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, Dichen Lachman, Scott Haze, and Campbell Scott. Scott plays rival Biosyn Genetics CEO Dr. Lewis Dodgson, previously played by Cameron Thor in the 1993 film.

That first trailer was heavy on the dramatic voice-overs and (of course) Ian Malcolm's trademark dire predictions—"We're racing toward the extinction of our species"—punctuated with scenes of dinosaurs co-existing with humans and contemporary flora and fauna. This latest trailer has all of that, and it also gives us a better idea of the plot.

The second trailer opens much like the first, with Owen, Claire, and an older Maisie on their farm in winter. They discover that a mama velociraptor named Blue has given birth—something that, Maisie insists, should be impossible. (Has nobody ever told her that nature, uh, finds a way? Seems like a major oversight.) Owen resolves to protect the pair, but then the baby is kidnapped, and Blue is none too pleased. Owen assures the enraged raptor that he will bring the baby back.

There's an exciting chase scene through city streets, with Owen on his motorcycle pursued by raptors, and there are several scenes of Jurassic creatures attacking by air, land, and sea—even from under the ice of a frozen lake. And apparently, we're going to meet "the biggest carnivore the world has ever seen," according to Grant. Clearly, the team has its work cut out for itself, but "if our world's gonna survive, what matters is what we do now," Ellie declares.

Jurassic World Dominion hits theaters on June 10, 2022. While this film concludes the trilogy, rest assured, there will be more to come in this hugely successful franchise.
