Weird Data Recovery Issue

using Windows 10 Professional 64 bit.

System is on ssd. WD Blue 2TB is D drive.

deleted a folder in D drive having around 300 files - screenshots (jpg & png), pdfs and 1 text file
immediately stopped writing on the disk.

tried stellar data recovery but it shows no files.

tried recuva and minitool.
both showed deleted folder and files.
both recovered all files but all recovered files are unusable, doesn't open.
only 1 file - the text file is recovered properly. even a 13kb image is corrput.

bitlocker is not on.
no other encryption is on.
what could be the reason? i am too curious as in the past i have recovered files after days even entire partition after formatting and reinstalling windows 2000 once. (all this during pre windows 10 days in 2000 prof., xp and 7).

I have never had much success with data recovery software.  Every time I have really needed to recover a deleted file, I have been unsuccessful.  I have tired several products (Stellar, Easus, Minitool, Ontrack).  Most have simply shown no files to recover.  This has all been under Windows 10.

No paging (virtual memory) on that disk? No System Restore Protection settings? No caches in any way? No auto defrag? And so on... :coolwink:

nothing of that sort. page file is on C. System Restore Protection is on only for C.

no caching or auto defrag.

Have you tried 7-Zip or Gizmo Drive to open the recovered data image files?

Also, I recommend you to try Minitool Power Data Recovery TE/WinPE.

already tried minitool and testdisk - same result

same with 7 zip

as i said in the original post -  "only 1 file - the text file is recovered properly." This file opens and shows the content. i am surprised at this only. why only text file and not pdf or any other?

I think you have the issues similar to the ones mentioned in the comments:

https://www.normanbauer.com/2013/07/25/how-to-recover-data-from-a-deleted-bitlocker-enabled-partition/

Since, I've never experienced this issue, I won't be able to help you in this issue. However, if I come across any solution, I'd surely share it.

thanks friend. i will check that but Bitlocker is not on for any of the 3 drives (1 SSD & 2 - 2TB WD Blue HDDs) on my system.

i have decided to back up all data on this drive, format it completely and then copy the data back. i will check then in the future if i delete something accidently.

last year i got this system. assembler installed windows on ssd. this 2 TB drive was installed in the system but nothing was done on it. later i formatted ssd and installed using microsoft windows 10 ISO. i have checked just now again and it shows bitlocker off on all the drives.

Also, I strongly recommend to keep copies(other partition/device/drives/anything with you other than cloud) of anything you consider important even if that is important until certain time. I do recommend regular Backups, especially, if you don't consider storage limitations.

In the long run, it'd eventually show others that you never lost anything important.

thanks a lot buddy. i know all that, have been doing similar since 1993, the days of 360kb 5.25inch floppy disk drives. unfortunately after so much experience, we usually make mistakes sometimes in overconfidence, sometimes hands move much faster. just a month back, similar thing happened. i tried to copy a file to a folder and found out that is is a duplicate copy so clicked on shift delete. immediately noticed that its deleting the whole folder so cancelled but by that time some 400 files got deleted.

i have survived at least 14-15 disk crashes / hardware failures - all data gone. still life goes on.

thanks again.
