Administrator DKT27 Posted February 13, 2010 Administrator Share Posted February 13, 2010 Sad. :(Well that seemed really unsafe. That pillars area should had been fully closed with bricks till the track ends/finishes.
i-con
This was front page on local news. Damn. Just wondering why are there steel pillars there? Shouldn't it be covered with soft stuffs or something?
Night Owl
The men's luge practice runs just started a few minutes ago. The men are now starting at the women's start line — 300 metres lower down the track. This will reduce top speeds by about 15 km/h.

LeetPirate
CBS News only shows up till when he hits the pole. This other site has some images. I am also wondering why the video was pulled. :think:VANCOUVER (GaeaTimes.com)- The opening ceremony of the recently inaugurated Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010 was a glitzy and spectacular event with hundreds of athletes and team officials joining the event. However, the opening of the grand event was not without its share of sad incidents. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian Luger succumbed to death while he was on training run after meeting a terrible accident. This was totally unexpected and the tragic incident cast a shadow of gloom over the Olympic opening ceremony. The officials and participants mourned his death. A YouTube Video showing the incident was put on the web shortly after the accident. However, the 'Lugar Dies' video was removed by Google later. It is not clear why Google took down the 'Lugar Dies' video but even for the short time it was available the YouTube site was accessed by thousands of viewers. They wanted to find out why the young athlete met with his tragic fate. He reportedly hit a metal pole and the injury proved to be fatal for him. Several attempts were made to bring him back to life and he was also taken to a hospital just after the mishap. However, the doctors could not keep him alive despite their best efforts. As per the news, preliminary efforts were made to start breathing before he was taken to the hospital. The 'Lugar Dies' video created a fair amount of interest among the viewers of 2010 Winter Olympics. It showed what efforts were made to keep the player alive.Source. Wow, I can't believe people still do it with those odds. 50% chance of not making it is plenty! The track has come under a lot of criticism as being too dangerous and possibly causing too many injuries. In fact other competitors have admitted that some turns provide only 50-50 odds for completion.
