Covid-19: Nearly 20 million people in UK have first vaccine dose

Nearly 20 million people in the UK have now had their first dose of coronavirus vaccine, according to the government's latest figures.

As of Friday, more than 19.6 million people had received their first dose - an increase of more than half a million in a day.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have had their second jab has risen to 768,810.

The government is aiming to offer all adults the vaccine by the end of July.

The next target is to offer a first dose to all over-50s by 15 April, as well as people aged 16-64 with certain underlying health conditions and unpaid carers for disabled and elderly people.

After that, they will start offering jabs to people by age group.

There are no plans yet to vaccinate children, although trials have been announced to test the Oxford University jab on children.

The latest government statistics show a total of 20,450,858 jabs have been administered in the UK - including 19,682,048 first doses, equivalent to more than one in three adults in the UK.

This includes more than 16.6 million first doses in England, more than 1.5 million in Scotland, 916,336 in Wales and 515,678 in Northern Ireland.

The figures also show another 7,434 cases and a further 290 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus.

In a tweet on Saturday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he was "delighted" at the latest figures.

"The vaccine roll-out shows what we can achieve when we work together," he said.

Meanwhile, Labour is calling on the government to set out a "proper plan" for how the local elections in May will be run safely.

Earlier this month it was announced the elections would go ahead on 6 May but with some changes - for example plastic screens in polling stations and people told to bring their own pens.

But deputy leader Angela Rayner accused the government of a "failure to take any action to encourage people to sign up to vote safely from home", meaning people could be disinclined to vote or face "dangerous crowds at polling stations".

A Cabinet Office spokesman said a "strong set of measures" had been put in place to make polling stations Covid-secure and a comprehensive public information campaign would be launched soon "so that voters are fully informed about how to participate".

Let us hope that a single dose is good, as the manufacturers of the vaccines currently being used advise 2 doses within 6 weeks maximum.

That's the issue.

Our gov. is making a big deal of the numbers and implying it's "job done, look how well your government is doing". It's just like when they claimed so many people had been tested for COVID when what they actually counted was test kits ordered (before they were even shipped let alone used), not finished test results.

It remains to be seen if we get a second injection in time. The other question is if a second injection of a different type works, because that is what is likely to happen going from recent comments. I've finally been 'called' for my first injection, but at a place I cannot possibly get to within reason so have had to get it rearranged. Now I have to wait again, but I will have been counted in the figures of 'had it'. I'm not alone in this; I know many people who have had exactly the same experience and are still waiting.

But, it's almost election time, so our government is doing everything it can to be seen as great heroes instead of the incompetent, money-grubbing, solely self-serving psychopaths they have unceasingly proved they are throughout this.

Remember, when Anthony Fauci said in early 2020 wearing a mask does nothing against the virus, then he said we should wear a mask later in the year, now in 2021, he says we need two wear two masks on top of each other.  For the smartest doctor around, he is real  moron.

The gov says half a million have had the second dose, but like everything, it depends how they count it. I don't personally know anyone who is even near second dose yet.

I am under 50yrs old and would make me in phase 2 or one of the last Cohorts , though due to " reasons " i had my first vaccine a week ago and had one bad headache for 36hrs and the second dose is between 4 and 12 weeks to get over 80% covered but after 22 days of the first dose you are 74% covered , this is why 20m of the first dose has been done to get all the sane people ( not anti vaxxers or conspiracy theorists ) to a 74% efficacy ...

Our UK target is all first doses for July as we are at near 40% now of the UK population of the first dose and not many off 1m have had the second dose and the UK are to give most people the same second dose as they had in the first dose , we still have the tin foil theorists though

Please remember the UK has basically 4 Governments as they are all devolved Wales under Labour and the firebreak which was a waste of time , Scotland are SNP and Ireland Members of the Legislative Assembly or MLAs, who come from different political parties ... So im not sure what " Government " you mean ?

No you will be done as " offered " and as im well aware most Doctors surgeries , Chemists or " hubs " are within a  to 10 mile range , so to put the UK down that is rolling out a vaccine at speed and to blame " Government " though not knowing where in the UK you are , which of the 4 " Governments " are you under as Sturgeon for the SNP lies to grab power , Drippy Drakeford ( Labour ) has no clue and Ireland the case rates are still high ( MLAs )

Take a step back before you cast insinuations at me...

There are at least two places nearby that are doing the injections; one less than ten minutes away. I cannot go to either of them, so I'm told... when I called the number (after trying to book online and getting that place that's too far) I was told they probably aren't on their system yet and I should try again in a week, or call my GP.

As to the GP, I have to wait until they get around to me. I tried them after the above phone call. They said it could be quite a while, and could not give me any clue as to when. I'm in the third category from the top due to medical reasons.

My father, who is most definitely at the very top of the list (age, serious, specifically relevant medial conditions and practically housebound in a wheelchair) was originally given a place 30 40 (I just checked) miles from home. He rejected it as he could not possibly get there even with help. He was finally done only a week ago yesterday.

And I'll put down this lying, cheating, stealing government as much as I want, because it's me personally they have lied to, about and directly cheated. This isn't a political statement; I'm not interested in politics but I am interested in honesty in leadership. It's a statement of the most obvious facts that the U.K. government has been caught out repeatedly telling so many lies, using heavily doctored statistics and looking after their own financial and personal interests that it's a disgrace.

It's funny just how many people I know of online that have had their injections, and were nowhere near the supposedly current group that was being done. The vast majority all seem to live in the same sort of political areas of the country, or somehow manage to have the right sort of connections even though the government has said that people are given the injections based purely on age and medical requirements. I know for a fact that some of those who have had it have neither of those claims.

One of them, while making disparaging comments about people 'up north' for breaking lockdown, was proudly sneaking out, seeing how fast he could get his motorbike on the nice, quiet roads and going fishing (while it was still banned). Funny, some people. The rest on that forum of upstanding and relatively well to do citizens (it's a collectors' forum and the things collected are often not cheap!) were practically applauding him.
