In 2020 alone, European countries were fined a total of € 171.3 million, according to data obtained from the GDPR Fines 2020 Report by Finbold.com. The fine was issued between January 1, 2020 and January 1, 2021.

 

Data leak fines reached considerable heights in 2020

 

According to the GDPR Fines 2020 Report, Italy has the highest fines of € 58.16 million for 34 violations. The UK is ranked second with a fine of € 43.9 million for just three violations. Both countries have accumulated 59.5% of the total EU GDPR fines. Germany is the third of the three major violations at € 37.39 million.

 

Sweden’s 15 violations have been fined € 14.27 million and Spain has closed the top five categories with € 8 million fines arising from 128 cases. In 2020, a total of 299 fines were registered in the EU.

 

H & M Hennes & Mauritz online shop AB & Co in Germany for a particular case. KG has been fined € 35,25 million for data protection breaches. This is the largest single fine for a particular data breach in 2020. Telecommunications operator TIM of Italy received the second highest fine of € 27.8 million. British Airways is third after imposing a fine of € 22,04 million.

 

Fines will occur more than two years after the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force in the EU and EEA on May 25, 2018.

 

Oliver Scott, Editor-in-Chief of Finbold.com, commented:

“Despite the campaign to force organizations to take better steps to protect consumer data, violations recorded across the EU remain significant under legislation coming into force in 2018. The organization will be in 2021. It is interesting to see if they have additional liability to prevent breaches, but the risks for companies to avoid the risk of regulatory action against breach and protect their reputation along with legal action. It’s still expensive. “
