Comprehensive error recovery and resume capability will restart broken or interrupted downloads due to lost connections, network problems, computer shutdowns, or unexpected power outages. Simple graphic user interface makes IDM user friendly and easy to use. Internet Download Manager has a smart download logic accelerator that features intelligent dynamic file segmentation and safe multipart downloading technology to accelerate your downloads. Unlike other download managers and accelerators Internet Download Manager segments downloaded files dynamically during download process and reuses available connections without additional connect and login stages to achieve best acceleration performance.

Standard Version

gag's patch is version specific, so of no use for the 7 Build.

Thanks for the information. What's the difference between the Standard Version and the Retail Version?

When you buy it it is adviced to:

Note that if you have an OLD version of IDM installed, please download the full-featured version of IDM at first from the following location:

It is not perfectly clear as what the advantages are though. Guess you will be just fine with the standard setup.

Still dont understand why so many users prefer Gag`s patch... must be a question of fidelity (?).

I thought the reason for using the Gag patch is in this post and the following two posts: Why to use Gag patch

Gag removes the registration fields, so there is no need for the app to spout bs about the app not being registered.

gag is an iconic type. He has been around for a long time. I do believe that marik will make contact with him.

Well, I also think that alpha patcher is better, it simply works on every version. But, I won a copy of IDM on one of a giveaways, so I don't need to worry for a 1 year. :)

Cheers ;)

OK, I fully understand. You uploaded to MediaFire the retail version that you bought. This is the idman518f.exe file that is the "fully-featured version". The idman518.exe download from their website is the standard version (30-day trial version). There is no known functional difference between these two versions.

Q: What is the difference between trial and registered versions?

Registered version has a number of additional features: no usage limitations, management of site passwords, delete all completed button, better utilization of bandwidth, built-in download logic optimizer. After the purchase you will also get prioritized technical support and the right for FREE upgrade to all new versions of IDM during one year after the registration.

Alpha Patcher works well just have to patch each time you update...I leave the patch in the install directory so just have to execute it when I update ^_^

Cool. Thanks for the information, Marik.

Nobody here used the Standard version as a 30-day trial, I don't think.

The purpose of the Standard version is that it was the only version you could use with the Gag patch. As far as I can see and remember, the only differences between the Standard version with the Gag patch versus the Retail version with the Alpha patcher are:

  1. Help -> About now shows "Version: 5.18 Build 7 (Jan/20/2010) Full" and there is a "Check for Update" button
  2. I don't believe the Gag patch showed a Purchase button (under Help -> About) like I'm now seeing after the Alpha patch)
  3. There was no Registration menu item with the Gag patch

I don't see any other differences between Standard + Gag patch versus Retail + Alpha patch. Both have the Site Logins tab to save "User names and passwords for servers/sites". And both are downloading files slightly faster than the rated top speed from my ISP. :w00t:

I installed Internet Download Manager 5.18 Build 5 (Standard Version with the Gag patch) earlier on a fairly fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Everything worked fine. And when Build 7 here came out (Retail Version with Alpha Patcher) everything still works fine.

However, I had a problem on Windows XP. I was using Free Download Manager 3.0.871. I uninstalled Free Download Manager and rebooted. Then I installed Internet Download Manager 5.18 Build 7 Retail, made sure I exited out of it completely and then I ran the Alpha Patcher successfully and rebooted. I set my options just like I did on Windows 7. When I tried to download something though, the full Internet Download Manager window appeared and after awhile, I would get an Internet Download Manager error 0x80080005. I did a search on this error, but I didn't find anything helpful. Twice I rebooted my PC and tried again, but error 0x80080005 persisted.

Anyway, I uninstalled IDM 5.8 Build 7, rebooted, and then reinstalled it. This time I was told I had a fake/blacklisted serial (just like I saw with Windows 7 earlier). The Alpha Patcher ran successfully again. I started up Firefox and tried to download something, but IDM didn't intercept the download. I rebooted again and Internet Download Manager 5.18 Build 7 is finally working on Windows XP now!! :dance2:

I just thought I would document this in case somebody else runs into this problem.

EDIT: OK, now I know exactly what went wrong. I normally run Firefox on Windows XP with the help of DropMyRights v1.04 (Every Windows XP user should drop their rights). IDM worked earlier on Windows XP because I ran Firefox without DropMyRights. When I went back to running Firefox with DropMyRights, the 0x80080005 error returned.

So you cannot use DropMyRights with Internet Download Manager, but I had no problem using DropMyRights with Free Download Manager. Grrrr. :frusty:
