Microsoft to release a new perpetual license version of Office next year

Three years ago at Ignite, Microsoft announced Office 2019, its latest version of Office that can be purchased on a perpetual license, meaning that you own it forever. Now here we are, three years later, and it's being announced that there's a new version on the way.

Some speculated three years ago that Office 2019 was to be the last perpetual license version of the product, with Microsoft's push to get users onto Office 365 (now Microsoft 365), its subscription-based licensing model. Microsoft was always careful not to confirm this though, always saying that it would gauge the market. If businesses still don't want to move to Microsoft 365, then the Redmond firm will keep churning out new versions of Office.

All the company said is that this new version will be available for Windows and Mac, but it didn't say the name of the product. Based on what we've seen, it will likely be called Office 2022.

Microsoft also talked up its next versions of server products, like Exchange Server. The company is recommending that those on Exchange Server 2013 or 2016 start making plans to upgrade to Exchange Server 2019, promising that that's the last major upgrade they'll ever need to do. The next version will support in-place upgrades from Exchange Server 2019 for at least two years.

Perpetual license, own it forever.

And what if the company suddenly (unilaterally) decide to move all its products to the subscription-based licensing model?

Read about those who bought such perpetual license to adobe, sounds like they are in a deep sh.t now :dunno:

1) Upgrading to Exchange 2019 is the last major upgrade that needs be done.

or

2) The next Exchange version will support in-place upgrades for at least two years.

Its just a way to get money  out of  home users  like buying   a PC with Windows  10  on it  . M$  got paid regardless  if you nuke it and put  another OS  on it even  if you use Linux on it they count you as  a Windows 10 user. I installed  it on 3  of my PCs once and  none of  them  has it now. but i'm 3  of there users lol .

Business want touch a perpetual license version anymore they all use Office 365  if there any size .

1. Because they already in deep with M$ they up too there eyeballs in  M$ services

2. They  have a unlimited  source  of revenue coming in unless they close  down  and it's a tax write off .

3, You dont get none  of  the benefits  of the  online services  that can be used with other services  they bought.

Personally I thought Office 2019 was their last perpetually licensed offering only because of the product's unusual support cycle: 5 years of mainstream support + 2 years of extended support. Used to be 5 each. Office 2019's end of support date also aligned with that of Office 2016, leaving 365 as the sole choice to go to after that date.

Wonder if they will be offering their refreshed Project app for perpetual licensing too. Haven't seen it in action in real life yet, but the feature set and the new UI look very, very good.
