Google's upcoming Nest speaker leaks, successor to the original Google Home

It has been quite a few years since Google released the original Google Home smart speaker. The last smart speaker product from the company was the Nest Mini that was announced at its 'Made by Google' hardware event in October 2019. A true Google Home replacement, however, was nowhere to be seen. It looks like Google is finally preparing to release a successor to the original Google Home under the Nest branding.

The new Google Nest speaker was recently certified by the Japanese Wireless Standard which is the equivalent of the FCC in the United States. The listing has revealed the design of the upcoming Google Assistant smart speaker. As evident from the photos (via Androidtv_Rumor (Twitter), the new Google Nest speaker looks quite a bit different from the original Google Home and has a very odd shape. Similar to the HomePod though, the speaker is now almost entirely covered in a mesh fabric that should facilitate better sound quality. The device will also come with a physical mute button for the peace of mind of all privacy-conscious folks out there.

As per 9to5Google, the Nest Speaker is codenamed "Prince" and has larger drivers which should lead to it offering better sound quality than the original Google Home. It is also expected to come with a proprietary 30W power adapter similar to the original Google Home. While not mentioned, it is possible that like the Nest Mini and the Google Home, the new Nest Speaker also has hidden LEDs on the top along with touch controls.

The regulatory listing does not shed any light on when Google will announce the new Nest speaker. However, given the delay in the launch of the Pixel 4a, it is now looking increasingly likely that we could see Google announce all its new hardware products at a Made by Google event in late Q3 or early Q4.

Google confirms new Nest smart speaker with official photo and video

The same day it leaked

Nest_image.0.png

Google has responded to the inadvertent reveal of a new Nest smart speaker through regulatory filings by, well, confirming its existence. The company just sent The Verge an official photo of the device, referring to it only as “what the Nest team is working on from home.”

The speaker looks somewhere between the pillowy Nest Mini and the larger Google Home Max, with a similar ability to stand vertically. The picture shows it wrapped in a blue fabric, while the photos from the filing depicted a more neutral grey design.

Google also shared a brief teaser video that shows the speaker being used in the background, including a pink-ish color variant.

Google’s hardware products are notorious for leaking early, so as with the Pixel 4, it’s helpful to see the company get ahead of that reality. No word on when this new Nest speaker will be revealed in full or released, though.

Google officially reveals its new Nest speaker

1594350463_google-nest-speaker_story.jpg

Google's upcoming Nest speaker leaked for the first time in photos yesterday. Now, instead of waiting for more leaks to show off the smart speaker, Google has gone ahead and shared a photo and teaser video of the speaker with some publications.

The image shared by Google shows off its upcoming Nest speaker in all its glory. Compared to the original Google Home, the new Nest speaker does have a very different design, it is actually unlike any other smart speaker in the market right now. The entire front of the speaker is now covered with a mesh material and the photo also confirms the presence of four LEDs at the front.

The company also shared a quick teaser video of the Nest speaker which hints at it being portable and gives us a glimpse at the different colors the speaker will be available in.

It is unusual for a company to share product photos of a device months ahead of its release, but then Google did something similar with the Pixel 4 last year where it confirmed its design after the first set of leaks.

As previously reported,y the Google Nest smart speaker will be a replacement to the original Google Home. It will feature a bigger driver that should help with sound quality, and it will also have a physical mute switch like on the Nest Mini. It is likely that Google will announce this new smart speaker alongside its Pixel 5 lineup in October.
