x0o
Ive just put one of my "Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133 HDD (6y160p0)" - disks into a "Techsolo TMF-3560" external storage case. The harddrive is jumpered as master, but i get the same problem when setting it to "cable select" and "slave".When i connect the case to my Acer 5024WLMi with usb 2.0 i get this error message:"Found new hardwareA problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."After that nothing happens. The device manager keeps updating, but doesent find or install anything. Cant find it in "Disk management" either. Both my mp3-player and my usb-mouse connect without any problems.I use Windows XP Professional Corporate, SP2 with all the updates. I tried my external drive on my machine with win2003ent, and it worked just fine. But i get the same problem on my third computer also using xp pro corp sp2.Ive googled this problem for a long time now and found that a number of people have the exact same problem with sp2. Lots of problems but no answers.Anyone? Give it a shot!edit: Tried it in another computer with xp pro now, and it worked fine ):

dMog
has the hard drive been formatted???? it must be formatted to be recognized by the operating system Yup, ntfs..have you F disked the drive...that must be done toosaw this on a website when i had same problem Re:Have you FDISKed the drive yet?Ok, finally was able to figure out how to map this external drive. In System Properties -> Disk Drives -> WDCxxx ... Selected that drive, clicked on Properties -> Settings, -> Put a checkmark in the "Removable" box, then it enabled the pulldown to select which letter to map it to. Then finally it showed up under "My Computer" Formatted the drive then did a Scan Disk. Voila!
dMog
this might be a better fix...Re:External USB hard drive not recognizedAnother solution that I used to solve the problem:I have a 120 mb Western Digital External hard disk drive listed by device manager under 'Disk Drives' but not recognized as a drive letter in 'my computer'.1. Right click on 'my computer' select manage, select disk drives. Be sure to maximize window or you will not see the sub-window you need to see.2. Position cursor in Disk 0 sub-window (identify the disk by the size you are expecting). Right click, select properties, select a drive letter, and then proceed to format. dMog
I had the same problem about a year ago when i purchased a usb hard drive enclosure...Ending up taking the drive out of the usb enclosure and hooking the drive up to the second hard drive plug in in the computer itself just to fdisk, format and assign a drive letter and a drive name and partition it.... after that was done i put it back in the usb enclosure and all was fine

dMog
sounds like it might work.. the problem is im trying to hook it up to my laptop ):do you have a PC or access to a PC from a friend...just to do the fdisk, format, partitioning, and drive letter assigning(I gave the drive the letter "X" just to be different and called it "USB DRIVE" just to make sure there were no problems in seeing which drive it was when hooked up to any other computers as it is Mobile...any way that's how did this myself ...someone else might have a better idea but i know this will work for you and is relatively simple. Hope this helped you and you can do it...if you need help on partitioning you can Google "how to partition a new drive with windows XP"
