kevpc
i am still hating Windows 10! MS and numerous security services worldwide want us, apparently, to install it, which makes me very nervous as to what their reasons are. equally as bad is the fact that, despite the lack now of updates for any other MS system and all the hype dished out, there have been more updates for Windows 10, or so it seems, than any other version but the majority of these updates, for what is billed as the best system MS has produced, have resulted in total disasters for some people/organisations, meaning, to me, that Windows 10 is the worst MS system ever released, causing people to remain on Windows 7 or taking the plunge and moving to Linux, for example. therefore, at the risk of appearing to be a complete dummy, can Zorin be installed on to and run from a USB drive, completely, rather than installing it as well as/instead of windows or whatever is being used atm? sorry if i missed this info. if it can be, any pointer to the instructions to accomplish this would be most welcome. many TIA kevpc

kevpc
many tnx for the reply and info. i did have a linux distro on a usb drive a while ago and all seemed fine, booting from the drive when selected on machine start up. i hoped this would be the case with Zorin but hadn't seen any info to say yes or no. i'm still not on Windows 10, obviously and want to stay off it as long as i can, if not permanently and am hoping that Zorin, if it's as good as stated/made out, will be an alternative when having to leave Windows 7 Ultimate. what is anyone's experience of using Zorin? is it as user-friendly as made out? any issues encountered when just trying to do day-to-day stuff, receive/send emails, open attachments, attach files, for example? Error reports. When you choose to send an error report in our software, it includes an anonymous unique identifier for your computer. The unique identifier does not identify you unless you (or someone acting on your behalf) discloses it separately. Census. When using Zorin OS, your computer may send us a ping which only includes the number of users, an anonymous identifier for the installation, Zorin OEM partner batch (if applicable), and your OS version on an hourly basis. We use this information to count the number of active users of Zorin OS. The identifier is only used for the census (to prevent double-counting) and does not personally identify you unless you (or someone acting on your behalf) discloses it separately. Below is a sample of the contents of the ping: {id:"68f2d95b-f51f-4a5d-9b48-a99c28691b89", usercount:"1", oembatch:"", version:"15"} You may choose to disable these pings by selecting the "Don't participate in the census" option in the Zorin OS installer or entering this Terminal command after installing Zorin OS: sudo apt remove zorin-os-census Source: https://zorinos.com/legal/privacy/ In Ubuntu you can uninstall error reporting not sure if its the same in Zorin sudo apt remove apport On Ubuntu i always uninstall everything to do with telemetry. Best to install the OS offline because if you opt out it still sends back a report you opted out . then after you install it you run sudo apt purge ubuntu-report popularity-contest apport whoopsie Just because it's open source don't mean they don't collect telemetry it just means you can fix it were it won't collect it because the code is open so you can see what it does. cruelsister
Kevpc- You can run Zorin from a USB. Just boot from the USB and select Try (same as what you state you have done with other Linux Distros. As to the use that you want, no issues should present. For an email application I would suggest that you use Thunderbird. Obviously either Chrome or Firefox as browsers work well on Zorin. Other than that Zorin OS is wonderful, and build updates are a breeze (just did the update to 15.2 this morning, and the update process will also search for and install application updates for those apps that you use). Please note, however, that some applications are Windows (or Mac) only, and even under Wine cannot be installed (as an example, TurboTax by Intuit). For such as these there are two options: 1). Install Boot Manager to keep whatever Windows version as a boot time choice, or 2). install VirtualBox (or VMWare) and run Windows from there. All in all, Zorin is a Hoot. ps: In defense of Win10, note that the amount of updates needed is directly proportional to the Win10 user base; and as the diversity of installed stuff (especially security apps) on these Windows systems is immense problems are bound to crop up. But for the vast majority of users a given Win10 update is not deadly. And aactually I've seen folks that normally feel scared to use W10 are much more accepting with StartIsBack installed. Hope this helped, Meghan

wolfie
@cruelsister - some very good points made. BTW, I used StartIsBack for a long time with Win10, but eventually got tired of the number of times the latest build of Win10 meant that StartIsBack was no longer compatible and I had to go out hunting for the latest cracked StartIsBack.. Now I use Open-Shell (a fork of Classic Start which itself was a continuation of the original Classic Shell) and have been very happy ever since!
