'True' Cloning Possible?

netRAT

Recommended Posts

Not sure if what I'm trying to achieve is actually possible...
I'd like to create a 'true' clone of my system drive which will retain all the unique identifiers of the source disk.
Many of the programs/plugins I have installed tie DRM licensing to the disk and so far every single cloning program I tried (including sector by sector method) result in having to reactivate a ton of softs/plugins which is a massively time consuming pain...

Any ideas if/how that can be avoided?

Are you cloning your system to another drive?

Maybe you need the target drive to have the same volume ID as the source, search for 'Volume Serial Number (also known as VSN)'; you can get this number with a simple DIR command. Long ago there was a tool called VolumeID, might be still around.

Edit: here is a link from msoft for VolumeID v2.1: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/volumeid

I just attempted the above and upon performing a fresh clone of my system drive using Macrium Reflect I booted the clone and learned to discover that Reflect already replicated the original VolumeID, hence this solution does not solve the problem.

I launched Ableton Live - which is known to tie DRM to disk hardware and as expected it asked for activation.

Any other ideas?

3.1.2 What if I Change My Computer’s Components?

If you change your computer components for some reason, Live may indeed ask you to authorize the software another time. Live does not need to be reauthorized when computer peripherals are replaced (audio or MIDI hardware, printers, modems). But you may need to authorize again if the motherboard, processor or network card is replaced. On some computers, reformatting a hard drive will require a new authorization

Hi,

Try doing a Image Backup and then Restore instead of cloning because many of those software will auto change the ID's of disks and partitions to avoid conflicts that will happen if you let Windows boot and see both drives the original and the clone.

When Restoring with only one drive as destination the ID's may be preserved.

Yeah, thanks. That's exactly what I'm using but the whole point is avoiding having to reactivate everything after cloning.

Interesting approach... Didn't think there would be any difference as opposed to cloning.

I'll definitely try.
