How to Survive an Airplane Crash

The chances of dying in a plane crash are reported to be around 9 million to ONE! These are great odds but not so consoling if you are a frequent flyer today. As terrorism, USAirways would be disaster and now the tragic crash of Air France 447 flying certainly has many of us at the edge of our seats!

Step 1. Choose your seat wisely! Figures show that while an average of 95% of people in plane crashes normally survive, there is a 40% better chance of survival if you are in the back of the plane. Front row seats may be first class, but they are also a ticket to the highest mortality rate during a crash. If you can, choose a seat in the back and then preferably an aisle seat so as to be able to get out and move as quickly as possible!

Step 2.Choose your clothing right! Cotton and wool are less flammable and should be your preferred fabric. Choose wool if you are going over a large body of water such as an ocean as wool stays insulated, cotton can be worn over land. You should also wear sensible shoes, you do not want to be barefoot or running in heels over debris. Avoid hanging clothes such as loose clothing or flaring clothing which may get caught on something and hold you up as you try to get out. During a crash you typically have only 90 seconds before a plane can explode, so you do not want to be slowed by ANYTHING! You may also want to bring a jacket for insulation should you be exposed to the elements.

Step 3.Be aware! Stay aware at all times by listening to the flight attendants, even if you have traveled a million times. Read the safety instructions as they do vary on different aircrafts. Make sure you know where you are on the plane, where the nearest exits are and also how many seats are in between you and the exit. This can come in handy if you cannot see because of smoke or chaos as you may have to count rows to the exit!

Step 4.Keep your seatbelt securely fastened at all times. Do not put it on loosely as this can cause injury. Likewise you do not want to put it over your stomach as that can cause serious internal injuries on impact and may render you immobile. The seatbelt should sit snug over your pelvis just above where a belt would be.

Step 5.Upon impact make sure you have put your oxygen mask on as well as a life jacket when appropriate. Then you should get into a brace position. This may mean either putting one hand over another, palm first, against the seat in front of you or alternately pushing your head onto your lap. Protect your head if you can with a coat or pillow.

Step 6.Remain calm and if there is smoke protect your breathing by putting a cloth or clothing over your mouth and nose. Wet it if possible for extra protection. At this point get to your nearest exit making sure to check if there is fire or danger near the exit so as to find an alternate exit if needed. Once out of the airplane get at least 1000 ft away, swim away if in water. You do want to make sure you are not too far away because the crash site will also be where rescue workers will look for survivors but at the same time you want to be far enough fast enough so any explosion, which can cover a vast area, does not injure you. Going upwind is infinitely better than merely going to a side or downwind. If there are flames you will see which way is downwind and which was is upwind by the way the flames blow. Regardless your first move should be to clear the area as soon as possible.

Really now, because I always assumed being a plane crash victim guaranteed death. They say brace for impact, why bother, if you hit a mountain you are screwed no matter what.

They should have a parachute for everyone, why they don't just proves idiots and cheapskates run the world.

Oxygen gets you HIGH, which puts you in a euphoric and docile state

Oxygen is the air you breathe everyday, how does it make one high?

What he meant is pure oxygen, we don't breathe pure oxygen.

What a way to go.

Better to think that nothing is going to happen or you will be running every 10 minutes to the bathroom...
