what is the best way to check for any malware , whether its working or not ?

hello friends ,

its been over two months and ESET AV hasnt picked up any infection / malware in my pc .

it does update regularly ( using the box / mara fix ) and i run it around once every two to three days .

my internet usage is also around 12 hours a day .

so i just doubt , whether its working or not ?????

is there any way by which we can check whether an av is working or not ?

also is there a way to check out the working of spywares ? ( been using IOBIT SECURITY 360 PRO for over a month now , but its real time protection hasnt given even one detection balloon !!

used to use LAVASOFT AD AWARE anniversary edition before , and yes it did warn about spywares , giving up info balloons ,,,but after the new update , its key got blown !!)

could any one provide a working key or crack for AD AWARE pro ?

or any other good antispyware with real time protection ?

or in fact do we really need them ?????

thanks guys .....

Search for all kind of porn in google, click every flashing link you see ... if your AV doesn't tell you anything after, let's say, 20 tries.. then it's not working. :afro:

On a serious note: I rely on the program and windows's Action Centre to tell me whether it's working or not.

-EDIT-

There is a faster way: install LimeWire, search for a random song and then when you see a file called "[song name] best hit ever" (or something like that), download it and see if you get any warning from ESET :sneaky:

Well I wouldn't recommend usin IOBIT Security products. You must be knowin what's goin around from a month or so.

ANW if it's on, then it's workin. See myself, ESET has not catch anythin from 2-3 months now. It doesn't mean it's not workin.

How to check if your Anti Virus is working [ Antivirus ]

Most of the time we just install the Anti Virus or the anti Malware programs and relax that they are working fine and one fine morning you see things not working and finally you realize that its your anti virus program which was not working at all. Here is a small test which you can do in case you are not sure if your anti virus program is working fine or not.

#1 Open Notepad and paste this string into it ( without double quotes )

“X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H* ”

#2 Save it and as soon as you do your antivirus real time protection should be able to detect it. In case you have disabled the real time protection run a scan for this file.

This file actually is a dummy virus which simulates like a virus which is provided by EICAR for distribution as the “EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File”, The file is a legitimate DOS program, and produces sensible results when run (it prints the message “EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!”). You can read more on this at EICAR Antivirus Test File

Antivirus test String

For those of you who say your auto scan doesn’t detect it… I have tried on a few anti-virus… If your anti-virus doesn’t scan text files under real time then it will not detect it until you do a system scan. To make it detect it real-time you need to tell your real-time scan to scan all files, not just “smart” file scan. You can test it by saving as an exe or other format that is on the auto detect file list.

thanks manpe ,

the limewire thing was a clever idea .

i always knew its so full of crap ( so have abandoned limewire ages ago , prefer torrents . )

but guess what ,

i didnt even had to search a song !!!

i just searched 'best hit ever ' and there it was see , all crap !!

see the attached capture ,

imagine !!!

thanks karachidude ,

the small command is a good trick !

ESET passed both the tests !!

@DKT

yes , did read about IOBIT stealing MALWARE databases for its products !!!

well,

i had it installed before ,

never troubled me , so i just let it lay aside ,

but now i concerned whether it is doing anything at all or not !!!

which anti spyware do you guys prefer ,

has a decent real time scanner and a good detection rate ??

Get Norton 2010 and you'll never have to worry about viruses/malware anymore and it has lighter footprint compared to ESET 4. So far Norton never fails to catch any virus but some false positives because I set Heuristic Protection and SONAR to Aggressive, set it lower should do the fix but I prefer it that way, it's up to you. I bought the 2009/2010 and I never regretted, if you don't wanna buy it you can use box's fix it's good I've heard.I dunno why I feel the same way like you I never feel safe with ESET ever since I switched from Kaspersky, ESET never catches anything.I love ESET just because it's way lighter if compared to Kaspersky and AV Test certifies it Advanced but I don't feel safe :o.

That would lead me to believe that you had issues that went wrong that you may have blamed the program for that may not be malware..and I am not defending the program but rather going along the lines to properly understand whats going on..

Supposedly the 2010 is low on CPU.. I would archive a version for myself but I hate messing with all of the forms right now.. But yeah before 2010.. complete crap and horrible to remove and deal with.. constant pain in the butt.. Eevery machine I came across with some form of it in it.. I removed.. People loved me for it..

hello ,

well ESET has been ruling the roost for me !

be it low foot print , hardware resources , or the heuristics ,

it just performs good !

never had a trouble with it and it has in deed kept me safe from threats , even from sources i thought were safe !

it was just that , my laptop dint get any infection in the past 2 months and so ESET dint reported it ,

so was just worried that is the box/mara fix working all right or not ?:)

and for the record ,

i am using NORTON AV 2010 on my desktop ,

n yes it is light ( way light than KASPERSKY , i ws using before )

n its good .

but found out one hitch ( dont know if it is one or not ),

seeing the karachidudes virus code , i searched for the EICAR in google .

the first result let me to the EICAR home page and it had malware test files , which could be downloaded .........http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

the moment i hovered the cursor over the downloaded link , ESET WARNING CAME UP , stating , the connection has been terminated and the EICAR file quarantined !!!

ESET dint let me download the file !! caught it in real time !!

i tried the same thing with NORTON AV 2010 on desktop ,

but no ,,,,

on hovering over the download link , it did not catch the threat

where as ESET DID CATCH ,

i dint even have to click on the link ,

it just caught it !!

so ???

try it guys .

what say ???

Well I remember when I tried Uninstallin Norton Internet Security way back in 2006, version 2005. I had my worst days of my life. It was almost next to impossible to uninstall it. I think I had to do a clean OS install, delete the Norton files. Then it was uninstalled.

That days I was not knowin about MS cleanup utility or Norton uninstaller.

That days of slowin my PC down are over, as far as surfin the internet is concerned, ESET AV has blocked many of the files when it arrive in the TEMP folder.

Well what you see with ESS right there is your active Web Protection.. and you obviously at least have that part setup correctly..I stand behind it.. because it really does keep my system safe.. and it has been with me since version2 AV.. I use ESS, even with its very simple intuitive interface for the Firewall it offers protection as it should..with great configurability..

DKT27... waiting for that to hit your temp file may be too late..if you have Web Access Protection you need to configure it..make sure you have it turned on for anything that uses a network connection..Mine usually will pick it up before I even finish loading the page..and will cut the connection.

Well I don't use ESET SS. I use ESET NOD32 AV. Well yea you are right, it catches before it fully arrives in the TEMP folder.
