The AchieVer
Microsoft Reveals Even More Features Coming to Microsoft Edge Browser The Chromium-based Microsoft Edge project advances fast, and after Windows 10 preview builds, Microsoft has now quietly released an early version of the Mac browsertoo. And while the software giant is working on making its browser available for more testers, it’s also focusing on the new features that would debut in Edge at some point in the future. Among them is support for the dark theme, something that we have already spotted in the existing preview versions of Microsoft Edge, as well as PDF features. These features were highlighted by Microsoft in a dedicated Edge session at the Build developer conference (via Neowin) and are supposed to go live in the browser in a future update. Microsoft also says it’s working on a share button, spell checking (again a feature that’s now rolling out to testers) and an option to clear browsing data on exit.Features still under considerationBut at the same time, there are also several features that are currently under consideration and which may not make the cut. Among them, there’s tab preview, inking, a favorites hub button, and settings tabs aside. These are features that Microsoft claims it is “rethinking and evolving,” albeit as per the cited source, there’s a chance they might not be released at all. Needless to say, while they have previously been offered as part of the original Microsoft Edge feature, bringing them to the Chromium-based experience is much difficult, as Microsoft has a lot of work to do under the hood and Edge could be the only browser to benefit from it. Improving Chromium is more like teamwork now, with several companies, including Microsoft and Google, contributing to its development. Despite this, the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is set to evolve in the coming months, so expect several new features to become available in the existing preview builds. The AchieVer
Chromium Microsoft Edge Beta for Windows 10 Leaked The beta version of Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser has just leaked and can be downloaded right now straight from the company’s own servers. What’s important to know, however, is that despite the downloads being served by Microsoft, this is an unofficial release of Microsoft Edge beta, as the company hasn’t yet announced the release. Officially, Microsoft only supports Microsoft Edge Canary and Dev for Windows 10. There are several things that you should have in mind when downloading this beta build of Microsoft Edge for Windows 10.Same version as the latest Dev releaseFirst of all, the downloaded files need to be renamed to the .exeformat to have the installer fire up. Then, because this is an unofficial release, the built-in update engine does not work and displays an error, as you can see in the screenshot here. The version number of this beta is 75.0.139.7, which is exactly the same as the most recent Dev build shipped to testers earlier this week. There’s a chance this is just an early beta build that Microsoft is testing internally, so it doesn’t bring any new features versus the existing preview versions of the browser. Early builds of Microsoft Edge for macOS also got leaked earlier this week. Officially, Microsoft lists Edge for macOS preview as “coming soon,” just like the Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 siblings. The beta was originally expected to land later this year after the first previews for the other platforms launch. You can download the new beta using the links below, but keep in mind this is still an unofficial release, so you won’t get anything new over the existing preview builds of Edge. The AchieVer
Microsoft Could Help Reduce Google Chrome Memory Usage It’s not a secret that Google Chrome is a major resource hog on Windows, and the more memory on the device, the higher the usage of the browser as well. And while Google has implemented a series of changes to resolve this over time, it looks like the final solution might come from none other than Microsoft. The Redmond-based software giant has become one of the biggest contributors to the Chromium project, and in a recent commit, Microsoft proposes one very simple way to reduce memory usage. This means that Google Chrome wouldn’t be the only browser to benefit from this update, but all browsers based on Chromium, including Microsoft’s very own Microsoft Edge. Microsoft has recently started migrating Microsoft Edge browser from EdgeHTML to Chromium and preview builds are only available on Windows 10.Support only for Windows 10The commit, which was spotted by WL, points to a method that would improve memory management on Windows 10. “Change the in-proc prefetcher to load the code into Image pages and not MapFile pages to save CPU and improve memory usage, and do nothing on OS builds that enable OS PreFetch of larger files. Note this require the PreFetchVirtualMemory API, so we’ll still read the file as data/MapFile on Win7,” a Microsoft engineer explains. What’s important to know is that such an improvement would be limited to Windows 10. The new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser will be available cross-platform, including on older versions of Windows, like Windows 7. Edge will also make its way to macOS and possibly on Linux. Needless to say, the aforementioned improvement is still in the commit stage, so it could take a while to make its way to Chromium browsers. But for now, it looks like Microsoft’s involvement in the development of Chromium is already paying off, not only for its users, but for everyone else.
