Microsoft blocks Windows 10 May 2019 Update on PCs that use USB storage or SD cards

Workaround: Users must remove any USB storage device and SD card and restart May 2019 Update installation.

Microsoft has published a support document today warning Windows 10 users that the impending May 2019 Update may not install on their systems if they use external USB storage devices or SD cards.

The OS maker cited problems with "inappropriate drive reassignment" as the main reason for blocking the May 2019 Update.

"Inappropriate drive reassignment can occur on eligible computers that have an external USB device or SD memory card attached during the installation of the May 2019 update," the company said. "

For this reason, these computers are currently blocked from receiving the May 2019 Update."

The following error message will be shown for Windows 10 users where the May 2019 Update has been blocked because of problematic external USB storage devices or SD cards.

Fortunately, there's a quick and simple workaround for this issue. Microsoft recommends that users remove any external USB or SD media and restart the May 2019 Update installation.

This includes USB thumb drives, USB-based external hard-drives, or SD cards inserted into card reader devices. Unless users are running Windows 10 from one of these devices --which is highly unlikely-- most users will be able to work around this issue.

In the long run, Microsoft plans to address the "inappropriate drive reassignment" issue in a future Windows 10 servicing update.

Microsoft won't block the May 2019 Update for all Windows 10 users, but only those running the April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803) or the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809). Users using older versions of Windows 10 will be able to move to the May 2019 Update without problems.

As its name implies, the May 2019 Update will be released next month. Windows 10 users can delay the company's semi-annual update, if they wish. For eager users, the May 2019 Update packages are already available on MSDN.

Windows 10 May update isn't even out yet for public. so these posts about problems with Windows 10 May update are useless since they are still considered Insider builds until May update shows up here, officially

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

but if posting about Windows insider issues is your thing then i suggest you take a look here

It isn’t a issue. It’s a warning from MS

“Microsoft has published a support document today warning Windows 10 users that the impending May 2019 Update may not install on their systems if they use external USB storage devices or SD cards.”

Why useless? Do you think anyone installing the 1903 isos released through MSDN would not like to be aware of this information?

MSDN? lol do you even know what that stands for?

Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) is the portion of Microsoft responsible for managing the firm's relationship with developers and testers, such as hardware developers interested in the operating system (OS), and software developers

so you think Software/hardware developers come to nsaneforum to get their news? they can totally figure it out on their own which is something as simple as removing a USB device. for the rest of the people who get their hands illegally on MSDN ISO files that's another story.

That comment kinda just nullifies everything else that was said, so I'll just comment on why. You're acting like this was some nsaneforum exclusive news. Why would they need to come here & what does that have to do with anything? It was a Microsoft published document. Who is the core target that even reads those? The average user? Just because it doesn't apply to you, doesn't mean it doesn't apply to anyone else. If they hadn't said anything then I feel you'd be complaining that they knew about it but didn't inform anyone.

who said it doesn't apply to me? i had been on that build for months lol

these are the pre-release problems and yes it is a problem if you need a workaround. there many more problems like this which only apply to Insiders, MSDN is considered pre-release too, and those with MSDN access get such news internally and directly from Microsoft.

Already aware of everything you're saying, and you also completely avoided... never mind. I have no idea what point you're trying to get across and it's really not worth any more of my time. Have a good day. :)

Read under: General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

See I told you don't need to make a fuss about it lol ;) only after few days the problem got fixed through Insider channel and the fix will be applied to the affected builds and guess what, 19H1 isn't even released to the public yet

problem with posts like yours is that they get obsolete pretty fast because Insider issues are normal and always temporary
