The AchieVer
How Microsoft Improves the Start Menu in Windows 10 Version May 2019 Update Windows 10 May 2019 Update, also known as version 1903, will bring a plethora of improvements to desktop computers, including refinements for the Start menu. As you may know if you’ve been an Insider from the very beginning, the Windows 10 Start menu received new tweaks with every OS feature update, so the May update makes no exception to this rule. In a post highlighting the Start menu changes coming to users with the release of Windows 10 version 1903, the Shell team at Microsoft explains that users can now uninstall twice more pre-installed apps as compared to the previous Windows release. Furthermore, managing multiple tiles at the same time is a thing now, and the Start menu also gets a simplified default layout for new devices, new user accounts, and clean installs.Separate process for the Start menuFluent Design has also been expanded to the left navigation bar, and the power button now comes with a little indicator when updates are pending a system reboot. But the most important change is without a doubt the creation of a separate process for the Start menu. “Start was part of the broader Shell experience. Moving Start into its own app, while of course still feeling integrated into the Shell, provided users with several benefits,” Microsoft explains. “By insulating Start from potential issues impacting other surfaces, Insiders saw measurable improvements in Start reliability. With the new app in place, Start was opening significantly faster. Even better, because Start is such a big part of the overall Windows experience for most users, we saw these reliability improvements contributing to performance improvements for the entire OS.” Windows 10 version 1903 is projected to launch in late May, and the rollout will take place gradually to devices across the world. Insiders can already try out the RTM build by enrolled in the Release Preview ring. shorty6100
Lots to choose from to suit each individual's needs. I also prefer StartisBack over the tiles since I do not have a touch screen.
Alanon
I have to say, contrary to my expectations, I sort of like the Windows 10 start menu. I enjoy having email and weather tiles next to my "ordinary" shortcuts and that little bit of interactivity. What I would change is the retarded grid system, the way colours are handled, the wide margins and obsessive scrolling, but the foundation is solid. The AchieVer
Microsoft creates a separate app for Start menu in Windows 10 In the interest of giving a performance boost to the overall Windows 10 experience, Microsoft created a separate app for the Start menu. Over the last few years, the Windows team fixed a plethora of issues that caused performance degradation, and to better address those performance issues, the team decided to hand over the Start menu to a separate app, says Microsoft. Needless to say, you won’t notice any visual changes in the start. However, if you compare the old menu experience with the new one you will notice that the latter opens the Start menu more quickly. This according to Microsoft also contributes to the performance improvements for the entire OS. Windows 10 Start before Windows 10 19H1 came into the picture was a part of the broader Windows Shell experience. Microsoft confirmed that the Start still is in close proximity to the Windows Shell and that the only purpose for creating a separate app was to provide users several benefits including performance boost. As I said earlier Microsoft already made the change in their upcoming major release of Windows 10 which has an official name called Windows 10 May 2019 Update(a.k.a 19H1/1903). And as the name suggests, the new update will start appearing in your PC(s) in the month of May but if you are one them who doesn’t like to wait then you should definitely register your PC in the Windows Insiders Program. The AchieVer
Start menu to get faster and better in Windows 10 May 2019 Update Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) is around the corners and the debut of the next update will also bring some new refinements to the Start menu. The improvements are not as substantial as the ones in the initial updates of Windows 10, though the refinements should improve the experience and performance. Windows 10 May 2019 Update’s default Start layout has been streamlined on new devices, new installations and new user account. This means if you clean install Windows 10 or create a new user account, the default layout of the Start menu would feature a cleaner, sleek, one-column design with fewer tiles. There are several other important changes that Windows 10 May 2019 Update will bring to the Start menu, including improved performance. Ability to clean up Start quickly Microsoft isn’t changing the UI of Start Menu, but the company has implemented one highly-requested feature: the ability to unpin a folder or group of tiles. Image Courtesy: Microsoft Microsoft understands managing multiple tiles could be a time-consuming task. Windows 10 May 2019 Update will allow you to configure your tiles even faster by allowing you to unpin all tiles that are in a group. Ability to uninstall built-in apps In Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft has doubled the number of pre-installed apps that can be removed. This means you can open the Start menu, head to the all apps list, right-click on the pre-installed app and uninstall it. Fluent Design and other improvements Image Courtesy: Microsoft Windows 10 version 1903 also brings Fluent Design elements to the left navigation pane in Start where the power button lives. In addition to Fluent Design, the navigation pane will also expand when you hover the mouse over the button labels, making it easier for users to understand the functionality of the icons. You’ll also notice an orange indicator on the power button when there’s a pending update that requires a reboot to finish the installation. Performance improvements Windows 10 19H1 update creates a separate process for the Start menu experience that would have a deeper impact on overall reliability. In earlier versions of Windows 10, Start has been part of the broader Shell experience which impacted its performance in some cases. In Windows 10 October 2018 Update or older, when anything slows down the Explorer process, the Start menu is also hit with performance and reliability issues. The next update will move Start to its own process, delivering improved performance and addressing reliability concerns. With its own process in place, Start will open significantly faster and interestingly, these improvements will also contribute to performance improvements for the entire OS. The process of Start menu is called ‘StartMenuExperienceHost’ and you will see it in the Windows Task Manager. “Moving Start into its own app, while of course still feeling integrated into the Shell, provided users with several benefits. By insulating Start from potential issues impacting other surfaces, Insiders saw measurable improvements in Start reliability,” Microsoft explains. Windows 10 May 2019 Update doesn’t bring too many new features to the Start menu, but it’s pretty clear that Microsoft is looking into different ways to improve the performance of the Start and the entire operating system.
