How to Leave the Windows Insider Program and Use Stable Windows 10 Version 1903

Microsoft is getting close to finalizing another major Windows 10 feature update, as the upcoming May 2019 Update, also known as version 1903, is now in the Release Preview ring.

Microsoft is getting close to finalizing another major Windows 10 feature update, as the upcoming May 2019 Update, also known as version 1903, is now in the Release Preview ring.

In other words, Microsoft should begin the public rollout of the May update in approximately 30 days, at which point this OS version should be considered stable and reliable enough for production devices.

Like the previous Windows 10 feature updates, version 1903 was developed with help from insiders. The Windows Insider program improved significantly since its debut in late 2014, and new users sign up to receive preview builds every day.

But at the same time, there are also users out there who decide to leave the program and instead stick with a stable build of Windows 10. The reason is as simple as it could be: running an early version of Windows 10 means dealing with bugs and performance issues, whereas a stable build should technically guarantee a more refined experience.

As a result, if you’re planning to leave the Windows Insider program, now’s the time to begin planning the transition. Once the May 2019 update ships next month, you should do this as soon as possible before Microsoft begins pushing 19H2 preview builds to insiders in your ring.

At this point, this is the current configuration of the Windows Insider program:

Skip Ahead – Windows 10 20H1
Fast ring – Windows 10 20H1
Slow ring – Windows 10 19H1 (version 1903)
Release Preview – Windows 10 19H1 (version 1903)

In other words, you must be part of the Slow or Release Preview rings to still be on Windows 10 version 1903 and be able to leave the program to stick with the stable version.

Leaving the Windows Insider program is easy. All you have to do is head over to the following path:

Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program > Stop getting preview builds

At this point, your Windows 10 device should leave the Windows Insider program and stick with the latest stable build of the operating system. If you do this after the May update ships, this means you should now be running the stable Windows 10 version 1903.

On the other hand, if you want to leave the Windows Insider program after Microsoft rolls out new Windows 10 19H2 preview builds and your computer has already been updated, there’s no other option than to roll back.

Windows 10 can take care of the whole thing for you, and you just need to follow this path:

Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back to the previous version of Windows 10

Keep in mind that the Windows Insider program is only recommended for users who understand the risks of running preview software on their devices. This is one of the reasons you shouldn’t install early Windows 10 feature updates on your main PC, as something could go wrong at any moment, rendering the device completely unusable.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update is already in the final development stages, so at this point the existing builds for Windows insiders should be very refined. There’s just one major bug to resolve before the go-ahead is given, as Microsoft says that games with certain anti-cheat software could cause a fatal crash on launch.

The software giant is already working with gaming developers to resolve this, and it’s expected the bug would be fixed before the public rollout begins next month. The rollout of Windows 10 May 2019 Update will take place slowly in stages, and users will be provided with manual download options if they don’t want to wait for the automatic update.
