How to change default search engine on the new Microsoft Edge (preview)

If Bing isn't for you, this guide shows you the steps to set your preferred search engine in the latest preview of Microsoft Edge using Chromium.

 

Microsoft is starting fresh with a new version of the Edge web browserbased on the Google's Chromium project, and while the early builds reveal a new experience that shares many of the same features found in Chrome, the company is adding its own tweaks and features, including Bing as the default search engine.

The only caveat is that even though Bing offers a great search experience, it's not a search engine for everyone. However, if you're moving from Chrome, and you want to keep using Google as your default search experience. Or you prefer something different (such as DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Ask, etc.), the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge includes an option to set a different search engine, you just need to know where to find the settings.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to change the default search engine in the latest preview of the new Chromium version of Microsoft Edge.

How to change default search engine on Microsoft Edge

To change the default search engine on the new version of Microsoft Edge, use these steps:

Important: Microsoft Edge is still in the early days of development, and the steps to customize this feature may change in the future.

1. Open Microsoft Edge (preview).

2. Load your favorite search engine (such as Google.com and DuckDuckGo.com), and perform a random search. (You're doing this to populate the option in the settings page.)

    

3. Click on the three-dotted menu button on the top-right.

4. Select the Settings option.

    

5. Click on Privacy and services.

6. Click the Address bar option at the bottom of the page.

    

7. Use the "Search engine used in the address bar" drop-down menu and select the default search engine.

    

Once you complete the steps, you should be able to open a new tab and search with the new default search engine.

Adding search engine manually

If the preferred search engine doesn't appear in the list, you'll need to add it manually with these steps:

1. Open Microsoft Edge (preview).
2. Click on the three-dotted menu button on the top-right.

3. Select the Settings option.

    

4. Click on Privacy and services.

5. Click the Address bar option at the bottom of the page.

    

6. Click the Manage search enginesoption.

    

   Quick tip: While in this page, if you have search engines that you don't use, you can always click the button on the right, and select the Remove option to delete them.

7. Click the Add button from the top-right.

    

8. Type a descriptive name for the option — for example, Google.
9. Type any keyword to comply with the requirement — for example, Google.
10. Type the exact search engine string — for example, to make Google the new default, the string should look like this: http://google.com/search?q=%sor https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%s to use DuckDuckGo.

11. Click the Add button.

     

12. Click the search engine three-dotted button and select the Make defaultoption.

     

After completing the steps, as you enter a new query in the address bar, the search should happen with the engine that you have specified. In addition, the new option should also appear in the "Search engine used in the address bar" drop-down menu, in the Address bar settings page.

We're focusing this guide on Windows 10, but these instructions may also work on the previous version of Windows as well as on other supported platforms like macOS (when available).
