steven36
“White Boy Rick” has spent most of his life in prison. He’s going to stay there a little while longer. According to the Associated Press, a Florida clemency board has denied an early prison release for Richard Wershe Jr., who has been incarcerated for his role in an interstate car theft ring which operated while he was already imprisoned. Wershe Jr., now famous because of a 2018 film based on his life starring Matthew McConaughey, spent 29 years in Michigan prisons on drug charges. He was paroled in Michigan in July 2017. At age 14, Wershe was an FBI informant in Detroit who helped convict a major cocaine trafficking ring but he eventually got caught selling drugs himself. The Executive Clemency Board sent a letter two weeks ago to Richard Wershe Jr.'s attorney, saying it has denied the request for a commuted sentence, according to the Associated Press. The letter didn't state a reason. Wershe's current release date is in October 2020. Richie Merritt portrayed Wershe Jr. in the 2018 film "White Boy Rick." Wershe has called his involvement in the auto theft “stupid,” but said he was motivated by a need to financially help his sister, who was caring for Wershe’s daughter at the time. His sister, Dawn, publicly criticized her family’s portrayal in the film directed by Yann Demange. Source
