I personally still hate Ubuntu, but I at least thank it for paving the way for Linux Mint. Which is ironic, because I used to love it before they messed it up. I think I got my start on the Hardy Heron version of Ubuntu, actually! Loved it back then. I personally use the Debian edition of Linux Mint now. I might suggest trying it out some time!
