(Opinion) BitTorrent Token Sold Out Quickly, But Who’s Buying?

BitTorrent tokens (BTT) went up for sale this week and within 15 minutes were completely sold out. This brought in a healthy $7 million from interested investors. While there is plenty of talk about the plans in the "cryptosphere," prospective users are quiet.

bittorrent.pngWhen there are any major newsworthy developments in the file-sharing world, our ‘tips’ mailbox usually fills up pretty quickly.

That’s particularly true for topics many people care about.

This week there was a pretty historic event in the file-sharing ecosystem. To our surprise, however, several days have gone by and we have yet to receive the first tip in our inbox.

We’re referring to the token sale of BitTorrent’s new BTT token. In just a few minutes the company, which struggled financially for years, raised $7 million from investors. A pretty impressive result to say the least.

Clearly, there is a massive interest in BTT. The token is part of BitTorrent and Tron’s plan to add “paid” sharing to their torrent clients through a new and open standard called “BitTorrent Speed.”

Later this year BitTorrent and uTorrent users will be able to earn tokens by seeding or spend them to speed up downloads.  With well over 100 million users, the potential market is huge.

That said, it’s unlikely that much of the $60 million that was raised came from actual users. As with many cryptocurrency related project, most investors are ultimately in it to make a profit from trading.

Those who search social media for BitTorrent-related mentions are now immersed in trading-related stats and graphs, with specialized news sites analyzing BTT’s ‘movements’ from day to day, something we’re not particularly interested in.

Instead, we decided to take a look at a place where the potential BTT users reside – in the BitTorrent and uTorrent forums, for example. Interestingly, there is not even a single mention of the new token, Tron, or the “BitTorrent Speed” project in general.

BitTorrent used to announce and discuss new uTorrent plans in their forums, but that’s not the case anymore.

This doesn’t mean that there’s no interest all, but it looks like most of the outreach is targeted at crypto investors instead of uTorrent and BitTorrent users. Perhaps that will change later, but it certainly seems odd.

After all, these uTorrent users are the ones who are expected to actually use BTT as “currency.”

Aside from this observation, we don’t want to speculate too much. BitTorrent Speed has been praised and criticized but, for now, we will follow the developments from the sidelines.

That said, we’re very interested in seeing how “BitTorrent Speed” will be received once it’s live. There is little doubt that there will be plenty of torrent users who want to be “paid” to seed, but how many will pay to speed up their downloads remains a question.

The only entity that is going to profit from this venture is the US Government the first time illegal content is distributed thru this system.  They have immediately subjected themselves to the RICO law.  Anyone participating in it is subject to this law regardless of where they live, since it was originally written to take down Costra Nostra, the Mafia, and other illegal organizations world wide.  It may take a couple years, but there is going to be one massive influx in the US coffers in the future.  Not to mention that many cities are in the planning phase of building new, huge jails across the country to house the ever growing criminal population.

Filehost from other countries have been doing this sort of thing  for many years and all the MPAA and RIAA so far has been able to do so far is cry about it in there yearly report  to the Government .Only luck they had was shutting down  sites based in the USA  like Hotfile  and sites that  were  using USA servers  like Megaupload  witch the  latter is costing taxpayers more than it's worth  it been in court forever because it involves someone not from the USA.  You think China going to hand over Justin Sun  when  filelockers  in the EU  have been doing it for years?

Only time one of them in the EU gets shut down is when countries in the EU takes them to court and gets them shut down. The USA has no jurisdiction over them.  The only thing the USA do is make it hard on people in the USA  to be able to buy anything from them,  but you can always find a reseller in Vietnam and buy it anyway.

All these  blogs  and most uploaders on  forums  you see on the internet with Filehost are being paid by the Filehost no different than what there doing here. It been going on for years it started out Rapidshare   giving free 30 day accounts  to there uploaders for so many uploads then Megaupload toped it by paying cash rewards to there uploaders  soon after they was 100s of sites paying cash  rewards . They are webmaster boards were uploaders have been posting about how much they make for years .

If they could stop Filehost from paying most all the blogs on the internet would close down they only do it because there being paid good money.

Piracy is a money racket it always has been long before it ever was  a www ..  Back years ago most p2p program inventors BitTorrent  is just one of many protocols of p2p

https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/wiki/List_of_P2P_protocols.html

they all used spyware and adware to get paid, no different in what BitTorrent does today with there clients .If it's not open source and they don't get money from donations its all about profit. Even if they was  no internet piracy they would still  be street piracy  just like there is illegal drugs  and sex workers and it's all about money  , the mafias and cartels  would  control it too. They most likely going to use BitTorrent users  to mine BTC  than pay them .BitTorrent inc. cant be trusted for many years now.:tooth:

I sure wouldn't pay just to speed up my torrent downloads. I can always do other things while I wait for the torrent downloads to finish.
