Matrix
What just happened? Companies are always looking for ways to grab your attention, but Vitaminwater's latest contest may take the cake. On Twitter, the beverage maker announced the #NoPhoneForAYear contest, which (as the name implies) challenges one contestant to live without mobile screens for a full year, with a $100,000 prize on offer if they succeed. Obviously, the rules of the context are not nearly as simple as that brief summary suggests. After all, Vitaminwater isn't going to give $100,000 to just anybody. As such, the company is weeding out the time-wasters by requiring all would-be entrants to publish a Tweet (or an Instagram post) explaining how they would spend their smartphone-free time if they are accepted into the contest. The Tweet must be submitted by January 8, and it has to contain the #NoPhoneforaYear and #contest hashtags. It also has to be original, relevant, and it must stay up throughout the entirety of the contest. The first phase of the contest will involve a panel of "qualified judges" reviewing each submission, and looking at things like creativity, brand relevance, overall quality, and humor to select a single entrant. Once an entrant has been selected, they must submit to a background check and agree to a "contract" laying out various rules (which are unknown to the general public) they will need to stick to during the following 365 days. Of course, Vitaminwater and its sponsors understand that some form of cell phone is effectively a must-have for the average individual to function in the modern world. Emergencies happen, and the last thing you want to do is allow yourself or a loved one to get hurt merely because of a contest. As such, the company will be providing the sole contestant with a free 1996-era cell phone and an accompanying phone plan for them to use at will. Furthermore, all tablets and smartphones are off-limits, though it sounds like laptops and desktops are perfectly fine. Original Article.

luisam
I can't understand what's the animadversion or the hostility of some people against smartphones. I have a smartphone because I need it and use it. Actually, not for instagram, facebook or twitter but for SMART COMMUNICATION! I use it for my phone calls, WORDWIDE! Whenever I travel, the first thing I do is to get a local SIM card and the plan that best suits me for my stay. Use whatsapp or telegram for international communication, no need for expensive roaming! I check my emails. Get worldwide news instantly through RSS feed. Use UBER to get the best taxi rates. Use it for some functions I'm compelled by my bank to manage my account though I really don't like it but that's the way some banks work. Use it as notebook, calculator and camera. Store photos on SD card. Also store a fine collection of favorite music and listen on the Bluetooth headphone. So my opinion that all this anti-smartphone discourse is simply meanless! Ah... I don't need a watch, chronometer or an alarm clock!
steven36
No one at my home has a smart phone we live in a dead zone were wireless internet don't work good and we already pay for the other internet as far as making calls we have a land land telephone at home and normal cell phones to take with us when traveling , driving or to work. For my car I have cassette adapter for my portable MP3 player and i just listen to music from my local storage some of my friends use a cassette adapter for smart phones and do the same thing . but Smart phone is not something you really have to have i went all my life just fine and never had one. 95% in the USA – now own a cellphone of some kind.that don't mean i'ts a smart phone because in Rural areas 26% of us only use a normal cell phone. And only 20% of people are smart phone depended meaning that 80% of people in the USA also use a PC of some kind. http://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheet/mobile/ Just because someone don't use a smartphone don't mean there anti smartphone it may mean they cant afford one or they live in a area like me , were there just a waste of money .. people who don't care about there privacy far out number people that are anti smartphone and we already know this, but just because you don't care about your privacy don't mean what they say is not the truth and meaningless .. Over on the privacy sub at reddit they talk about the dangers of using a smart phone everyday, so there is even dedicated forums for people who don't think it's a good idea to use smartphones . Everyone is entitled to there own opinion.

Now, the "funny" side is that cellphones are used intensively by under aged kids, as small as 6 - 7 years old and most teenagers, between 13 - 18 have and use smartphones. I couldn't find statistics but in my circle of friends, ALL their kids, with no exceptions, have smartphones, some even the latest and most expensive ones. I won't discuss if this is good or bad. It's just a FACT.

It's just a FACT. My kids are all grown up, but most kids parents pay for the the bill , so technically the kids don't have to pay for them .. Once they turn of age and can pay there bills then they will be part of the study. Its like when i was a kid i had all the latest music , electronics for that generation but that didn't mean i paid for any of it, so what i done didn't really matter yet and by the time I grew up tech had changed and we were using something else by then . If your willing to buy me a smartphone and pay for my wireless bill like kids have everything handed to them sure ill take 3 of them if 17% in the USA are using normal cellphones they sure not going to pay for a kids wireless internet unless they have a lot of money to pay for things they don't use . New research finds 95% of teens have access to a smartphone; 45% online ‘almost constantly’ http://www.pewinternet.org/2018/05/31/teens-social-media-technology-2018/ More kids have access to a smartphone than uses them all the time, meaning 45% of parents don't teach there kids to have a real life offline, so that's the parents at fault not the kids . We as grownups it's our responsibility we raise our kids up to not be internet addicts. Kids will be kids back in 2001 when I 1st came on the internet as a adult , there were kids pirating anything they wanted online with Windows PCs but that didn't make it a good thing there's even a documentary about it . If you don't watch after your kids good, they going to do things online and offline they shouldn't like they always have.
