command prompt not opening in windows 10

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I don't know if this is another screw up from MS, but I can't seem to open the command prompt anymore in windows, does anyone face this issue, is this because of the last bugs from the windows update by any chance and the best question is how to get this fixed or restored.

When I type command prompt, the window opens and closes quicly so I can't even type or access it?

appreciate any suggestions

thanks

I have seen "viruses" do that in infected computers 😁

To open the command prompt :

Windows key plus R, then type in the following, including all the spaces:

cmd /k ipconfig /all

the /k switch should keep the window open

Now , once the cmd is open, follow the steps mentioned below:

1. In a command prompt window, type echo %path%

This should display the PATH environment variable.

In particular, it should have the directories C:\Windows\system32 and C:\Windows in it. If it doesn't, this is your problem.

To fix it, do this:

1. Right-click Computer and select Properties.
2. Click the Advanced system settings link on the left.
3. Click the Environment variables button.
4. Find Path in the System variables list box and click the Edit button.
5. Add those two directories, separated by a semicolon and terminated by a semicolon, at the front of the path environment variable.
6. OK out of everything.

Once it’s fixed execute the following command:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command (System File Check) scans the integrity of all protected operating system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions where possible. When it cannot repair the damage, DISM should be run to fix as many errors as possible.

I tried the cmd entry with the /k however It still did not keep the window open, it closed immediately

Try this to Update PATH System Environment Variable

Type environ in Windows Start Search box

Click Edit the system environment variables to open System Properties with Advanced

Open Advanced Tab on System Properties and click Environment Variables

Click PATH in Environment Variables and click on Edit

Create New entry and add C:\Windows\SysWow64\, then click OK

Reboot your PC

After , following the above method, if still you are not able to open cmd then follow this ;

System File Checker

Click Start, enter powershell.exe in the Searchbox, right-click on powershell.exe, and then click Run as administrator.

Type the following command and hit ENTER:

sfc / scannow

After the scan is finished, you will see one of these things:

Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations

or

Windows resource protection found corrupt files and repaired successfully

Or

Windows resource protection found corrupt files and could not fix some of them

Post your result here and accordingly we can proceed.

Do let me know how it goes.

I thought it was due to a virus however windows defended nor hitmanpro identifies anything so far not unless something got damaged earlier as I was hit by some viruses but windows defender detected them and deleted them

Ok. We will work with the virus issue now.

First , download Rkill from the link mentioned below,

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

and  then download MBAM from this link:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Install , free version of MBAM .

Now , first you run Rkill, it will terminate any malicious processes and when it finishes, immediately run MBAM.

1.Open Malwarebytes > Click on the Update Tab  across the top> get the latest updates.

2. On the Scanner tab, make sure thePerform full scan option is selected and then click on theScanbutton to start scanning your computer

3. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while.

4. When the scan is finished a message box will appear

5. You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the Malwareremoval process.

6. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on theShow Resultsbutton.

7. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown

8. You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

9. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

10. You can now exit the MBAM program.

See if this helps.

mbm detected 32 adware and few trojans and quarantined them however the issue still persists, after the pc restarted there was a splash of 4 to 5 commands prompt screens which either is mbm doing something or its some wicked virus in hidden somewhere because cmd still does not open

Remove /delete the malware detected by MBAM  and run the following command in powershell as admin:

Dism.exe /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH

further , to remove adware , you can always use the ADWare cleaner , download link:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

quarantine files are at :

C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Quarantine

or

%ProgramData%\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Quarantine

anyways, you can delete these files from within MBAM also

What i presume is that your system is infected , hence the last resort to Do a Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

If you need any assistance with that regards , do let me know
