 I installed K-lite codec pack  without mpc-hc  cause I want to install  Mpc-be instead.  I don’t have to have the one that comes with K-lite installed do i?

I have been using MPC-BE without installing any codec pack for a number of years without any problems.  And, no, you don't have to have the one that comes with KLCP.

Same. I thought that was one advantage to any third party media player. They all seem to contain their own codecs to play music/videos without any third party codec software needed. I was always confused why K-Lite included a media player. I'm not sure how fancy people are trying to get with listening to music and watching movies. 😂

 

Before finding out about K-Lite, I was using ffdshow until I found out that it was pointless; I found I could play videos just fine with any third party player.

That is the reason why codec packs have these "EXTRAS"

It all depends on what media you play..

Right, but I always just downloaded codecs for people if they preferred to use WMP. If they didn't use WMP or didn't like it, then I would download MPC-HC alone for them. I know that the codecs need to be used with a player, but I don't understand why they picked a player that already has codecs. How can you know if the player is using its own codecs or if it's using the codecs installed by K-Lite?

The ones on the installer are LAV Filters to v0.73

 

The ones on the latest codec pack are LAV Filters to v0.731.. Of course if you have install KLITE its installation will redirect LAVFilters64 subdirs to its own subdir.. 

 

 

 

Of course if you know where to get the latest LAV filters, then do the filter search and integration process manually..

Run a video file, press CTRL+J . It will show a lot of information. Concentrate on the second last line. The decoder line. It says the decoder name. However, if it says - Internal - next to the decoder name, then it's using media player's build-in codec, if it's using using codec pack's codecs, it will not have - Internal - written next to it.
