Windows 10 version 1809 delay is causing devices to ship with unsupported software

Microsoft's rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update has been a rough road. On October 2, the company was so confident in it that it skipped over an entire ring of testing and brought it to the public. Four days later, it was removed from Windows Update servers due to files being deleted upon upgrading.

Later, issues were reported that have to do with extracting ZIP files. While the fix for that is in testing with Insiders, those that installed the update through production channels are still left without a fix.

But as reported by Brad Sams of Petri, this doesn't just affect consumers. It affects hardware manufacturers as well, and in a more significant way. For one thing, it's causing devices to ship with software that doesn't actually support the hardware in those devices.

Windows 10 version 1809 adds support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 chipset and Intel's ninth-generation Core processors. Unfortunately, devices on the market using these chips, such as Samsung's Galaxy Book2 and Lenovo's Yoga C630, are still shipping with Windows 10 version 1803.

That means that these devices are using a version of the OS that's somewhat untested, and OEMs are counting on Microsoft to fix things. Presumably, when Windows 10 version 1809 does arrive, performance and stability on these devices will improve.

There's also an issue with marketing and promotional materials. Companies can't say a device is shipping with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update if it's shipping with the April 2018 Update.

Hopefully, Microsoft will have Windows 10 version 1809 ready soon. It's been over a month, and the main issues that have been reported have fixes that are in testing.

since 98SE, i've always stored any data i want to keep off the main HDD, as once its gone its gone. now, 20 years later we are no better off in MS keeping our data safe or where we left it after an update

i've just read about another bug that i currently have issues with, which i thought was just my machine:-

As reported in a post (+ FIX) by How To Geek, a “strange bug” has been discovered in Windows 10.

This bug means file associations no longer work properly on Windows 10.

So, this means if you try to select certain applications as a default in Windows 10 then you won’t be able to.

“We’ve tested multiple Windows 10 PCs running the April 2018 Update and every single one we tested has this problem.

“It doesn’t affect every application, but it does at least affect Photoshop and Notepad++.

“This bug does not appear to affect PCs running the October 2018 Update, which was pulled because of multiple data loss bugs and has not yet been re-released.

“Based on our research and various social media posts we’ve found, our theory is that this stopped working properly when Microsoft released the KB4462919 update on October 9.

“But we really don’t know. It’s broken on the stable version of Windows 10 today and it’s probably been broken for a while. This definitely used to work.”

After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps.

In some cases, Microsoft Notepad or other Win32 programs cannot be set as the default.

In some cases, attempting to set application defaults again will succeed.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available in late November 2018.
