Codec is short for Compressor-Decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular movie formats and even some rare formats.Download

harpua
I had used K-lite for years but I've very recently switched to Shark007's W7 codec pack (has x86 and x64 versions) which is also FREE. It's got all the important and great filters and splitters, but not more than you need, (except for CORE AVC PRO which can be added separately, also KL doesn't have that one either), and an awesome settings/tweaking application. Blows all the other codec packs away, imo. Really recommend anyone running 7 give this one a try. He has vista packs too. http://shark007.net/index.htmlHighly recommend Shark's packs for inclusion on the front page, also. He updates them frequently, just like K-lite does. It's mostly the same codecs and filters that are in the other packs like K-lite and he keeps them updated. What sets Sharks pack apart is his settings/tweaking application that lets you easily adjust everything and which filters and splitters are used for various file types. (See screen shot below.) Works with all direct show media players such as MPC-HC and WMP. Also, importantly, it does not hack your system like the other codec packs tend to do.A tip for anyone who tries Sharks packs: The settings app is required to be run as an administrator to make most of the settings changes. In 7 (not sure about Vista anymore), you can set the .exe to always be run as administrator in the properties tab of the .exe. That way you never will forget to run as administrator.
