  1. 1. What kind of monitor do you mainly use?

LCDs seems to be replacing the good old CRTs in an exponential rate especially with their drop in prices, so I was wandering how many people still using CRTs or already upgraded LCDs as their main monitor...

Nah, it's just those radioactive electrons it keeps beaming into your brain. Kinda scary when you think about it, an electron gun shooting at the screen but some of them get through the screen and hit your face. LOLLL Death machine!

I used 14 inch CRT for years. Was a pain in the !@#$%. About 8 months ago I bought 17 inch LCD. It's great to use it. When I bought the CRT it was about RS.25,000 that is $520 as per the current rate. And now when I bought the LCD it was priced at RS.7,500 that is about $150 as per the current rate. So I feel it's not expensive at all. In addition to many pluses to LCD, another is the electricity usage. My old CRT was usin 60WATTS at normal. And my current LCD needs just 20Watts at normal. It's great to use LCDs.

I mainly use my laptop (which has an LCD display).

I use a 19-inch BenQ FP937s LCD on my old Windows XP SP3 machine.

Be reminded that as with everything else, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to choosing LCD now. You have to be aware that not all LCD screens are made equal, some are crappy and will damage your eyesight. For example companies make 99% of LCD monitors anti-glare but this in fact causes light dispersion in ways that would irritate your eyes. I don't know who came up with that stupid idea to make desktop LCD screens anti-glare by default when they are all inside buildings and not out in the sunlight. Even if your desktop LCD is by a window you can just install curtains or blinds. There are also cheap LCDs out there that have large dot pitch and thus big spaces between the pixels resulting in blurry images all the time.

When buying a new LCD, you best do some research into glossy screen finishes as they are easier on your eyes, but know that some of them have poor colour reproduction abilities and you may be looking at blue on the screen but when you print something it turns out to be purple. Long story short is to always do some research, it costs you very little time to google for a review of the LCD model you may want to buy. Many companies have their own propriety name to describe glossy screens, like BrightView, CrystalView, etc. Do the research and shop smart, your health depends on it.

It's good that I wear anti-glare specs from years. Well I keep my LCD's brightness to at low as possible to be clearly seen from the eye.

I forgot to mention I have Samsung monitor. And my family friend engineer buys everythin for me. He does some proper inquiry, then buys it. :)

My situation is pretty similar, also wear the glasses and decrease the brightness, but I buy my own stuff and I did proper inquiry and guess what I bought? also Samsung hehe

Great. :D

Well I set my brightness to 20, contrast to 85. Color to R:25, G:25, B:50. I'm sure you cannot match that.

Mine is maximum as well, I guess my eyes are still capable of handling this kind of abuse, not for long, probably :P Now you mention it I'll have a look at those settings, maybe fix them up a little :)

I agree, same here, especially games that need it, like Left 4 Dead.

  • 9 months later...

I used to use a 19" CRT, but got sick of lugging it around for gaming meets.

Decided to leave it at the venue and have been though a couple of 17" TFTs and upgraded to 2x 19" when the opportunity became available.
