uTorrent 3.5.3 Build 44428

uTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients. With uTorrent, you can download files faster and contribute by sharing files and bandwidth. Additionally, uTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange.

Thanks to kabino for the update.

Yes, I've seen that. Very old news from over 3 years ago. Things have moved on since.

There's no more shenanigans (bitcoin mining) now. Epic Scale (/website) no longer exists.

I'd imagine everyone affected back then would have uninstalled the affected uT build and any additional (unwanted) software that was installed.

would you trust them again though? Do you debug their software often to check if they did it again?

Yes. And have done since.

If there was/had been any more nonsense like Epic Scale, don't you think it'd be all over TorrentFreak, uTorrent forum and elsewhere by now?

I don't need to debug (I don't know how anyway), but there's likely many people doing so... just waiting to shout again from the rooftops about potential scandals.

Interesting, considering the kind of betrayal of trust we're talking about, and that there are lots of free and open-source alternatives like qBitorrent.

I think it is quite dangerous trusting and blindly waiting for the community in discovering bugs and abuses. As an IT professional I can attest that those kind of findings are not always transparent, and usually they are discovered after the damage was already done.

Also: they could just lower the load the next time and no one would notice, why wouldn't they dare doing it again?

Btw, I infer you do not use Windows 10 right?

Next time? Your first post suggested... well it actually states it's still happening which isn't the case at all.

Otherwise why mention something related to the affected 3.4.2.x builds on the 3.5.3.44428 topic?

And no, I don't use Windows 10.

No, I did not. You infer what you want, I can use present tense to discuss the past or the future and it is absolutely valid in at least 2 of the 4 languages I speak. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_present)

it is the same software as far as I am concerned. Why not bring it up? Raising awareness about security and ethics should be everyone's concern.

And I see you use XP SP3.

Do you distrust Windows 10?

I personally won't use windows 10, not because i distrust it, because frankly I think its crap. it also spy's on you which is why there are so many apps to disable it, and then of course theres the resources it uses..

my brother brought me a laptop to fix as it was running slow.. on the laptop itself it had stickers for windows 7 home, it had 4gb of memory installed.. and over 100processes running and was pretty much at 100% all the time.. windows 10 also likes to update itself as soon as its connected via the web.. so on this laptop when i turned it on i had to wait 1hr before i could actually look at it to see why it was slow. waiting for the downloaded updates to install.. 0 found on spyware, 0 virus, 0 trojans.. just to many processes.. mostly to do with the laptop itself.. bluetooth, usb, keyboard, touchpad etc.

Now back on target.. Utorrent.. smaller than most torrent apps, I didnt know that it did do bitcoin years ago..but it doesnt now,  but then again i always used the cracked version and didnt install any opencandy..etc..

Yes and no. If it's mining bitcoin i sure as hell want to know about, so valid discussion.

The sniping back and forth we can do without

All it takes is a fanboy and a person that most likely don't use something  to act like they are concerned about other peoples security to cause and argument .  I dont see no sources pointing to  it mining bitcoin other than the fact it's License: Adware and M$ WD and ESET-NOD32 flags  it as Potentially Unwanted Software  So is is many patches and cracks flagged.

https://windowsreport.com/utorrent-malware/

I'm not going use this crapware there to many clean open source alternatives out there if i even still used  torrent programs but i don't  and  heck they could be exploited as well ..I  use torrent to direct  download and it also works for paid hosters  for $18.00  for every 6  months and download every thing with IDM and JDownloader 2 . But if you want to use uTorrent it's up to you do you trust what fanboys and uTorrent says that it's a fasle postive  or do you trust the security vendors that's a hard call to make bcause I dont trust ether one .

Agreed steven 36. I don't have trust in just about everything that has anything to do with the internet! I stopped using utorrent about 2 years ago. I no longer go on the internet without using VPN and adguard. But then, only a fool would think he\she is safe using those two tools. I use them so that my browser and computer doesn't fill with junk. That is about the only use of those products, not safety from tracking or anything like that.

  • 2 weeks later...

guys, I used to run utorrent in portable mode with my settings.dat file in the same folder. When i switch PC and launch utorrent, it is attempting to install. I have to quit the installer and noticed it deletes my settings.dat file. Any way to correct this ?
