SCAM  EMAILS  I  RECEIVED  LATELY    part 2

I checked my other e-mail account and found there 2 scam emails as well.  One from ''Bank of America'' similar to that shown already in the part # 1 of my “scam saga'' . However the second seems to be more interesting;  This time it's ''FBI Executive Director'' who reached out to me.  ;)

Oh gosh ...  Looks like scammers' imagination is really limitless !

FBI scam emails are at the least a decade old.  Here is a warning from FBI, "E-Mail Scammers Continue to Send Fake FBI Messages", dated December 11, 2008.

Yet  scammers still keep exploiting the trick ... and if they do -  probably all the time are able to find new victims .

I got the said e-mail  on March 15, 2018.

You might be interested what caused this (little) ‘“flood“ of malicious spam e-mails in the course of just a few days...

Here is the answer :

On March 14, got informed by my ISP that their client database suffered lately from the significant data leak (cyber attack ?).

I'm almost sure those scam e-mails - all sent in just a few days span - are directly related to this breach.

The only thing that really puzzles me is :  how come 2 e-mail addresses were involved ?

The one I used to register by my ISP  has been the obvious target.

But how those scammers found out about the other address ?

Interestingly that second address has been assigned by Google (but not by ISP) as an alternative/emergency e-mail address for the first one.

Any ideas how those scammers could find out about my second e-mail address ?

For the second email you probably gave your it to a legitimate service that inadvertedly gave it to a rogue ad Agency, or perhaps they just 'bruteforce' common email names possibilities and your email name is easy to find (eg. surname.name, name[(number(s)], etc...) then just added suffixes like gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc.

It is unfortunate that many people still fall for these types of scams-not just email. My mother frantically called me once saying "Microsoft Support" called because something is wrong with the computer-they will call back. I always wanted to play with these assholes just once. When they did call, I played along for a while until they realized I wasn't going to fall for it. Not to the extent of the legendary calls found on youtube, once the scammer realized I was playing, he responded with several profanity-laced metaphors. I in kind responded to the caller by saying "That's what you get for trying to scam people out of their hard earned money, you scammer asshole douche". A couple of references of doing something to my Mom and he finally hung up.

I have received emails from the IRS, Social Security, and a flood of spam calls on my Android phone specifically Med4Care. It is also unfortunate that enough people still fall for these scammer criminals to make money off of unsuspecting individuals.
