Administrator DKT27 Posted September 21, 2009 Administrator Share Posted September 21, 2009 Microsoft to release free security software soonMicrosoft plans to release the final version of its free antivirus software soon, according to a note sent to testers late Sunday. "The final version of Microsoft Security Essentials will be released to the public in the coming weeks," Microsoft said in the note. Microsoft first announced its plans for the product, then code-named Morro, last November, at the same time the company said it was scrapping its paid Windows Live OneCare product. Public beta testing of Security Essentials started in June, with Microsoft reaching its goal of 75,000 testers just one day after it issued a call for them. On a personal note, I've been using the product on several machines since June, and I like the way--unlike other antivirus programs--it doesn't make a spectacle of itself, just quietly doing its thing. I often forget it is running on a machine, yet it did save my bacon a couple weeks back when I almost caught Koobface from a friend on Facebook.Source------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*Personal note: I hope atleast this time MS gets it right. CODYQX4
Does anyone think this can challenge NIS?I use NIS and give everyone NIS, and IMO, there aren't many security suites that can rival it, especially when putting on people's PC's that won't ever open it an just need it to work.I hear Comodo is good but the settings have to be optimized and that it would be hard for an average user.I think this will be easy to use but I don't think it will be good, as Windows Defender and Firewall are almost useless. Maybe if it is based on their Enterprise security products it might be good.
Bizarre™
As long as it's free, many will be tempted to try it.I'll be looking forward to the comments / reviews / reactions.
CODYQX4
Same here, I'll probably give the final a test on another machine.

Administrator DKT27 Posted September 21, 2009 Author Administrator Share Posted September 21, 2009 @CODYX4: You may consider it good enough to recommend it to everyone. But it's the computer speed that matters.@Bizarre: Include me in the testin list. Atlast it's will be a stable one.@heath: Yes it's codenamed Morro. ;)

HX1
Wow sounds like something is going wrong with your drivers for the firewall or something.. That is odd..probably not alone though..could be something your doing when settings them up..if it is it may cause some other issues on down the road depending on what is used/installed on the system..And yes I think everyone has had there fair share of problems and worse sometimes.. GRiM try reading reviews on pcmag and you will see for yourself. Norton is the best according to many reviews and my own testing.
manpe
So is there a good pill for Norton? I can't see it listed in Nsane (which is odd as it's top again) OR there isn't a fix for it (which doesn't seem to be the case because some use it). Administrator DKT27 Posted September 22, 2009 Author Administrator Share Posted September 22, 2009 Lets take MS point here. Well Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool has always worked better than any other AV for me as far as scannin computer for infection is the concerned. And ones I installed Windows Defender on my XP which is not genuine, it worked as a HIPS like, and believe me it had stopped my dangerous softwares to enter my PC and also stopped my of them to make any changes. So point is, can MS be trusted for makin a good security software? I think we should give it another chance. ;)

i-con
I think this is just the Windows Live OneCare on steroids. If i heard from my friend correctly who is in the Microsoft Ambassador bullshit, he told me about this a few months ago. Then again, i might be wrong. But hey, it's free
