strumz
Hi, I realize this might be an old topic but it's new to me. My Windows 10 Menu button intermittently stops working, maybe 2 or 3 times a week. It's really frustrating when you need to get to a program. I've tried various online suggestions of which a couple worked for a day. i.e. 1. Press [Windows key] + [R] 2. type "powershell" (or "powershell.exe") & hit enter 3. Type "stop-process -processname explorer" & hit enter Shutting down easily is also a problem, so I use the powershell and type the command “shutdown /s" People comment that it is connected to the file explorer.exe, and I'm sure this is true, because when I right click to create or change the name of a folder, I get weird results. So there is a connection. I've tried "Scannow" and it comes up "no faults found". Any pointers to put me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Strumz
compgen1534
I really don't know what it could be, but yes you are correct it does have something to do with explorer. Since I'd have to be in front of your machine to see the real issue, my only solution right now is to try popping in the installation CD and just doing an upgrade, because that ends up resetting system files, but leaves everything else intact Of course, someone else probably has a way better idea....! Guest maut
I got the same problem as you descibed, I had Windows 10 Enterprise x64, but after a while buttons weren't working anymore, I thought it was because of the crap and spy shit inside this Windows version so i installed the LTSB x64 release and all works well again.. maybe try that specific OS? Cheers
strumz
Thanks compgen I did the free upgrade from windows 7 online, so don't have an original CD, so I suppose that rules out that avenue!!!

I'm not Maut, but let me tell you. It's a version meant for enterprises and other government agencies.. You cannot upgrade your current version to LTSB without loosing your data and having to reactivate, sidenote. The premise behind it is that if you plan on installing that edition you're going to have to either backup your data or wipe your harddrive and start over. Regards Edit: It comes with two windows apps, calculator and feedback, no telemetry?, something like that...
psyko666
Just make a backup and do a fresh new install of the OS, that's the best, and maut is right about the LTSB version, I also have it installed, works great, without apps and other stuff from M$. strumz
Thanks Vdogeek, a registry fix would be easiest, the suggestion was this..... Open regedit.exe Right click on HKEY_Users and select properties Make sure that "All Application Packages" exists and has Read Permission Repeat for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Check the subkeys HARDWARE, SAM , SOFTWARE, SYSTEM. Make sure that All Application Packages has the Read permission. ## My check found this...... HARDWEAR / all applications packages / Read is ticked but greyed out. SAM / does not have "all applications packages".. it has CREATOR owner, Read is not ticked. SOFTWEAR / all applications packages /Read is ticked SYSTEM / all applications packages / Read is ticked. It's all Greek to me, anyone understand this? And this was copied from that link above. Go to Search, type regedit and open Registry Editor Go to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ ImmersiveShell\Launcher Click Edit, New, DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it UseExperience Double-click the newly created item and set the value to 0 Click OK, close the Registry Editor and then restart your computer VDO
strumz
Hi Compgen, Got the link ok, but it reflects my system info. Ver 1709 Build 16299.192 Windows Iso says it's (Windows 10 Fall Creator Update 1709 (Build 16299.15) Would there be any point then in running it? strumz
Hi Vdogeek, I've tried that registry trick, (making a backup first of course). The Reboot fixed it for tonight, so it will take a few days to see if it problem comes back. Compgen, I'm downloading the Iso in case I need it in coming days. When you run the upgrade, it replaces system files and other parts of the OS that are damaged.. that was the whole idea behind it. not that you even had to upgrade, it was just an avenue so you wouldn't have to wipe your harddrive and loose your data... Glad to see the problem was fixed though... Regards
smokeyjoe
You can try this as well. Mine did the same thing it must had been a Windows update. https://thewindowsplus.org/start-button-not-working-after-windows-10-update/

hissash
My system had the same issues recently also but I fixed it by finally using https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer to find out that my ShellExperienceHost.exe was supended so I right clicked and reset it and viola my start menu, power, settings and user icon where no longer grayed out and usable. Thus fixing the issue and so far it hasn't happened again so I'll go with it but if it happens again I may have to reinstall my os.
strumz
Thanks to everyone for their input to my problem, it's all good stuff. I'll work my way through these solutions if the problem comes back. The Registry fix may be working, I'll get back if there are any developments. BTW hissash, my menu button is working at the moment, and after running the Process Explorer, I too noticed that ShellExperiencedHost.exe is suspended, so it's something to consider if the problem returns. Many thanks and have a great day, friends. Strumz
csmdew
My ShellExperiencedHost.exe is also suspended but start menu has no problems, however just for info how can I get it to restart; have tried by going to it's location and dbl clicking but it still will not start, thanks.
