funkyy
DTK27, Kalju, jordan4x and the rest of you guys....I identified and resolved the problem with my slow starting Firefox. Remember I had tried all the suggestions on Mozilla Help such as create new profile, refresh Firefox, restart with add-ons disabled, disable hardware acceleration etc etc. Always the start up delay was 24 seconds so I thought maybe ESET is scanning it or maybe the firewall is blocking it...but I checked those settings and everything was fine there. Then I found Tor wasn't opening..I kept getting the "Couldn't connect to Tor control port". I uninstalled TOR and re-installed several times, in different locations and using different versions of TOR..still wouldn't work. Then Firefox didn't remember my window size settings and I had to keep adjusting them manually on each visit to a site. O.k. by now I've spent hours farting about with this so I decided to do a complete system image installation using an image I had made before these problems manifested themselves. After doing the system image restore the slow start up continued and TOR still wouldn't work. Obviously it's either a Firefox problem or an computer problem as yet unidentified. I did a hard drive scan using Seagate SeaTools for Windows...it showed my hard drive was healthy. Now I'm thinking there must be some kind of conflict, so I remember that up until 2017 I had been using AVG Internet Security and when I upgraded it to AVG 2018 it totally destabilized my computer (screen freezes etc) so I uninstalled it AND ran the AVG Remover tool that they say removes ll traces of AVG from your computer. I then installed ESET Int Security. I had a hunch about the AVG instability that I had previously suffered so I did a manual search for AVG on my computer and in Windows system32 folder I found about 17 AVG files and folders. I deleted some of them manually, others wouldn't delete because I needed "System permission". So I downloaded a tool called AVG Clear and ran it. Now all the remnants of AVG are gone. I rebooted, clicked Firefox and...it opened in 2 SECONDS!!!! My window sizes are remembered and I'm just about to install and check TOR...but I feel confident that the source of the problem is eliminated now. Oh, and guess what?..at the end of the "AVG Clear" process it gave me a message "Incompatible antivirus found. We politely suggest you uninstall it to prevent problems with your computer"....talk about irony!!!! I hope this might give a clue to anyone else who's trying to find the source of a similar problem with their computer.

Then when I decided to upgrade to AVG 2018 I first went to their official web pages and they clearly stated that AVG 2018 supported Win XP. While I was installing the new AVG 2018 I got a Microsoft error message basically saying that "....the program you are trying to install contains a mini port driver NDSI which has not passed Microsoft'......if you continue with the installation this may cause stability problems with your computer etc etc". I stopped the installation and went to another AVG web page and it also clearly stated that Win XP was supported by AVG 2018....so I did the installation again and completed it. After that I had terrible problems with my computer, total freeze ups and other erratic behaviour which eventually made me change to Win 7. I'm now using ESET Int Security and hopefully my woes are behind me.
