The test was made on 10 August-05 September 2009, using Windows XP Professional SP3 on a Pentium Dual Core 2Ghz, 2048MB DDRAM-2.

All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc.

The default settings of each program were not used, in order for each program to achieve its maximum detection rate. Because of this, there is a possibility for the tested programs to detect a few false positives.

All programs were updated on August 10th 2009, between 03.00AM and 07.00AM GMT.

The 562086 virus samples were chosen using Kaspersky, F-Prot, Nod32, Dr.Web, BitDefender and McAfee antivirus programs’ reports. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus program detected it as a new virus.

MS-DOS based virus samples were not used.

ALL virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept were the ones that were packed using external-dos-packers (that means not winzip, winrar, winace etc).

The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program (Renexts) and were unique, according to checksum32 filesize.

Most "fake" virus samples were removed, as well as "garbage" files.

Note: There has been some criticism of Virus.Gr test methods by some "experts". Some common complaints are the fact that the malware samples have to be detected by at least one scanner, there is the scope for non-functional files and that all settings in the applications are not always the same. The author has tried to address some from their biased perspective here. All readers should additionally remember that there is more to a scanner than just a on-demand detection ratio. Things such as resource usage, feature set and frequency of updates should additionally be considered. Please test some scanners to find the best one for your needs. Additionally between a few percent of detection scanners should be consider equal in terms of detection.

This is surly bias. Nod32 shouldn't be so down. I mean cmon ZoneAlarm Antivirus on the top of Nod32.

Everyone of these I have seen, GDATA is at the top .. I may just try a trial again .. not Notebook Security and see what happens..I LOVE ESS and my other tools.. but I had rather had the Number 1 spot for protection..

GDATA and some others don't use just 1 kernel. They use multiple.. That what I thought tho.. dunno if it's right, heard it somewhere..

There was a reason i posted the notes section. I guess you guys haven't read/ chosen to ignore atleast a part of it.

@heath, G DATA is a multi-engine scanner, so can be quite heavy on the system.

Yeah I read that this just an 'On-Demand' Test..

I tried GDATA, and a trial reset, but I made the mistake of using the Notebook Security version which there is no trial for.. so when I would update of check for it.. I started getting some problems..It uses BitDefender and another engine that started with an 'A'. You have the option of Engines A and B.. or both.. very comprehensive program, and the first AV protection I have trialled that included registry key cleaning..a boot disk for cleaning and backup software if I remember right..The Notebook Security version also came with an Encrypted Safe for important data.. Thats why i was thinking about running a trial of like a regular version that they have for trial..I had went into the site and downloaded the Notebook version without reading about the absence of a trial for it..I should have been watching I guess..LOL

The scanning part was what seemed to take the most time..

GDATA use BitDefender and Avast engines (before is Avast and Kaspersky). For a Multi-engine AV is not heavy i think. When i tried it the unique thing i not liked is some CPU increase in updates.... but i think is my computer. You have option to choose what engine you can use.... only avast or only bitdefender.... if its running heavy a good thing is choose only one to run in realtime protection and put the 2 to work only in the Web shield. Ah another thing.... for it use 2 engines, the full scans is a bit slow. And a good work of Box in make a trial reset for it.

these results look biased...i think av-comparatives and virus bulletin results are more accurate..

ESET NOD is a long way down. Seems wrong. Oh well.

Going to wait for a list from a company/group that can be trusted.

The av-comparatives report will be released this month. I think more to the end of the month.
