How To Speed Up Torrents with Low Seeders

Here’s a ridiculously easy tip to squeeze out as many users as you can on a dead or dying torrent. It’s particularly handy when a torrent stops near the end, and/or the seed count is listed as zero. Having said that, I’ve also noticed that it helps to increase download speeds from healthy torrents, as well.

NOTE: Do not attempt this trick with private torrents - it’ll only get you banned from the tracker. Use this tip with torrents you find at mininova, thepiratebay, etc.

Applying the trackers to uTorrent:

In particular, this is a ‘µTorrent-compatible’ list, so that’s where I’ll show the example.

Open µTorrent, and right-click on the suspiciously-slow torrent. Select "Properties…".

In the first window box, the "General" tab should be open, and there should already be a list of existing trackers (or perhaps just one). ‘Copy’ the list from above, and ‘paste’ them into the window.

You should now be left with what looks like this (see below). Be sure to click "OK" to save the changes.

While you’re at it, make sure that “Enable DHT” and “Peer Exchange” have checks in them, too. Now, if there are ANY public users on that torrent, you’ll be sure to find them.

P.S.This will only work if there's seeders on additional trackers.

It would be kinda hard copying the list, because this board automatically reduces the length of the link (for ex. I see link http://tracker2.isto...:60500/announce) which is useless if you want to make it easily copiable. Maybe you can attach it as a text file or send me the file via PM?

This is basically like when you go to another site and grab a torrent which you already have, and the program asks you if you want to add the trackers from it. For instance you DL a Torrent from PirateBay.. The site interferes with the torrent's normal operation or an outside force tries to...or for any number of reasons ( Banning of IP ranges/Peers ).. quite a list. Nevertheless.. IF said torrent is available anywhere else with other trackers, this should crawl the trackers ( even if they were added by someone else ) and download from those sources..providing everything matches..

So yes this CAN work, especially for those that you REALLY want to finish up..You can look at the Verbose logging for more details and in other areas of the program to shed more light on the subject..Just like manually updating the tracker and resetting the torrent..

EDIT: No this isn't the 'magic hurricane/tornado resolve for sucking files from out of nowhere' tool..LOL

I tried something similar when I first started using torrents & it worked but only a little bit. I remember reading that adding trackers to a torrent won't speed it up, so adding more will only put more stress on the tracker itself. That could result in a false seed count when a user is trying to download a torrent.

But if this does work then go ahead & do it. I wouldn't know because I don't need a speed increase because of all of the private trackers I'm at ;)

Well I recommend to add some famous trackers but not every tracker. As many of them wont work and will keep on updatin and will hit your connection a little bit while doin so. I would also recommend usin uTorrent Beta and UDP trackers.

Wait, Wait, Wait....

I'd like to include the additional note as to why this works and why OP's subject title is misleading.

A tracker is simply a server that keeps tabs on peers for a select torrent. The more trackers you have available to a torrent, the more peers you can track, and the more peers your BitTorrent client can select from to optimize download and upload speeds to everyone within the swarm. With that being said, it will not increase any transfer speeds for your torrent UNLESS you have been restricted to a set amount of peers with "poor" connection speeds. (Note that "poor" is a very subjective term.)

To flesh this concept out a little bit: Say you don't do what karachidude recommends and keep the default trackers that come with the torrent. Let's say that there are 4 seeders: one with a 72KBps upload rate, another with 16KBps, another with 56KBps, and another with 2KBps. You have a 192KBps download rate. If no one else has connected to the 72KBps peer, you would then initiate data transfer with that peer over the other slower seeders.

Take karachidude's "mod" into effect. Now you have a list of public trackers to check for peers for that torrent. The number could be the same, but in the chance that a tracker not included in the torrent IS tracking that torrent, your client is introduced to more peers. For this example, I'll say that there are 2 more seeders now: one at 192KBps, the other at 300KBps. With a larger peer list, your client will automatically see that there is a new seeder uploading at 192KBps, see that you're capable of downloading 192KBps, and if that peer isn't connected to anyone yet, you would swap to that new peer and have a better download transfer rate. You would not be downloading from Mr. 300KBps because you're not even capable of receiving information that fast, and thus that peer is reserved for others seeking those download speeds. In this sense, your download speed would increase.

However, what if the additional list of seeders have no one with higher transfer rates? Then you don't benefit, as you already have the optimal transfer rate for that given moment.

This brings up some questions. Do torrents already have enough trackers within the announce portion of the file to render OP's mod as irrelevant and unnecessary? Are you, yourself as a peer, being tracked according to the trackers of the torrents that you are currently downloading? (If I am downloading two files, one being tracked by Demonoid and the other The Pirate Bay, would I be "visible" to both Demonoid and The Pirate Bay trackers?) If not, are you only visible to trackers that you specify in your torrent client's tracker list?
