[Solved][courtesy - recruit, KP333] 2in1 laptop format issue

Recommended Posts

Hello fellas :hi:

I've got an Acer one 10 s1002 2in1 convertible tab/laptop to format. I need to format it because the device is severely infected.

So the device came with windows 10 home 32-bit pre-installed. It has a 32 GB eMMC (no HDD). Acer has driver support only for win 10 and win 8.1. So I have tried formatting with both but couldn't succeed. During boot I entered the BIOS and changed the boot order adding my bootable media in first place to boot from  there. But after I exit the BIOS saving the changes that I have made, it boots from the internal eMMC, not from my bootable media. I also tried pressing F8 during restart to get to the boot menu and directly selected my bootable media but instead of booting from my media, it takes me to the BIOS. I also tried disabling the secure boot but no use.

The unbelievable thing is I have disabled all other boot orders in BIOS including the internal eMMC and only allowed the one in order #1 which is my bootable device but yet after restart it boots from the internal eMMC completely ignoring the BIOS settings.

So what do I do?

hi rudrax,

I think you have to disable in BIOS:

- Quickboot/Fastboot
- Intel Smart Response Technology (ISRT)
- FastStartUp

if not works yet, inside W10 normally, then reboot while press SHIFT key

you should see Troubleshoot > Advanced boot > boot from external

Some UEFI firmware allow to boot in LEGACY mode, aka Compatibility Support Module, look at this also in your UEFI (bios)

you can run a command line that will allow you to access to recovery options at startup and then use resetpc option to completely reinstall your win10 home by choosing either keep your files or delete all your files.

here's what you should do to be able to use recovery options at startup without using any usb flash disk :

you access to your session then you go to command prompt (in admin mode) then you type this :

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

then you restart your machine and you press quickly on F8 key at the restart, then you should be able to use resetpc option.

None of those options are present in the BIOS.

Factory reset won't clear the infection. The infection stays intact after resetting the laptop to factory mode.

I don't know the name of the virus. But let me tell you its symptoms. When the windows starts and get to the lock screen, the mouse cursor moves like crazy. The login form fill by itself. If I somehow manage to get to the desktop, the icons starts to move by themselves, opens up folders, deletes and creates files by itself. Also some keyboard keys don't work for a particular session and the enter key and the back arrow are dead permanently.

Being a 2in1, the device has very specific BIOS which is not similar to the other laptops. I also have the BIOS updated to its latest version.

Yes factory mode seems to do the same job as resetpc option but i don't think both options have completely same functions so better to try factory mode, you don't lose nothing by doing that, you will see the result.

You might have an Acer One 10 S1002 but according to Acer it didn't come with Windows 10, it came with Windows 8.1.  According to Acer your device was capable of being upgraded to Windows 10 32bit and evidently it was.  In the bios look for Acer Disk to Disk Recovery (D2D Recovery) in the Main and make sure it is Enabled.  Save and Exit the bios and reboot.  This should recover your original system.  If it doesn't then your only option is to send it in to Acer for repair.  (You might have a bad keyboard, and you can check this by plugging an external keyboard into the usb port, but there aren't any other real troubleshooting solutions available for this particular product.)

LOL Mr. Sys Admin : you are so funny !

@rudrax

Bro,

I know the issue : I have a ThinkPad tablet X86 !

Why does not work ? Because is not native UEFI and we'll have to use UEFI CSM mode.

See here more details :

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824898.aspx

In order to create a usb bootable drive follow these steps :

  1. Insert a usb drive with 8GB storage, at least  ;
  2. Run CMD as admin ;
  3. Type diskpart, and then press Enter ;
  4. Type list disk, and then press Enter ;
  5. Make note of the USB flash drive's disk number ;
  6. In the elevated command prompt, type select disk #, and then press Enter. Substitute # with the usb drive disk number. For example, select disk 4 ;
  7. Type clean, and then press Enter ;
  8. Type create partition primary, and then press Enter ;
  9. Type format fs=fat32 quick, and then press Enter ;
  10. Type active, and then press Enter ;
  11. Type assign, and then press Enter ;
  12. Type list volume, and then press Enter ;
  13. Type exit, and then press Enter ;
  14. Copy the .iso files to the USB flash drive
  15. Done !

Try again and see if it boots from the usb drive : for me it worked !

Let me know if worked for you or not.
I got and other issues, for e.g the touch screen has not worked and I needed to add the tablet a USB hub in order to connect a mouse....and others..!

Regards,

;)

It turned out that the version of windows 8.1 that I have, the bootmgr.efi file and the efi folder are missing. Can anyone here upload the bootmgr.efi and efi folder from a windows 8.1 x86  setup, if that will work. Otherwise I have to download the full setup again.

Have you tried booting into safe mode then scan the drive for the virus

Well well well, after adding the files sent by @KP333 upon my request and following @Recruit's instructions to create the bootable media, I am now able to get into the boot mode finally. But when it gets to the partition window, there is no drives to install. It's completely blank. Below the windows there is a yellow triangle stating the error as We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click load driver.

Now, How do I resolve this?

I found the suggestion to install the storage Controller driver as most relevant solution to my problem but I have no idea where I can get it?

you go to driverscloud.com website and you do a scan for your pc configuration and after the scan is finished you will see all the drivers to appear, you go to "storage controler" driver and you download this driver, you extract all the files from the .exe file using 7-zip tool  to be able to use these files to recognize your 32 GB flash disk.

Once you extract these files, you put them in a folder into usb flash disk then you boot once again from the usb flash disk and when you see the partition window you click on "add driver" or something like that and you go to the concerned folder which contains the files and if everything goes well, your 32 GB flash disk will be recognized and will finally appear in the partition window.

The extracted files i mentionned should look like this => here

So where do I add the convert gpt command in the above sequence?

  To change a master boot record disk into a GUID partition table disk using a command line

  1. Back up or move the data on the basic master boot record (MBR) disk you want to convert into a GUID partition table (GPT) disk.

  2. Open an elevated command prompt (right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator) and type diskpart. If the disk does not contain any partitions or volumes, skip to step 6

  3.  DISKPART prompt, type list disk. Make note of the disk number you want to convert.

  4.  DISKPART prompt, type select disk <disknumber>.

  5. DISKPART prompt, type clean.

    ImportantImportant
    Running the clean command will delete all partitions or volumes on the disk.

    6.At the DISKPART prompt, type convert gpt.

Update: After creating GPT disk, the bootable media is not recognized during boot. So, that's failed.

I have downloaded the storage controller driver and the disk drive driver with the help of device manager and added those file to the bootable media. Then during the boot, I have selected each one of them but none of them made any difference.

Maybe you understood wrong : you need to convert the tablet disk drive  ( eMMC ) to GPT format, not the usb drive.....
Please be more concise and tell us which disk did you convert....

After your response I can recommend you some tools to convert the disk to GPT...

I did convert the bootable media, not the internal eMMC. The eMMC is already in GPT format. I can see that clearly while executing diskpart list disk command. So not need to convert the eMMC to GPT as it is already in GPT.
