Probably only the name and the GUI? What's the difference between WinZIP/WinRAR and 7-Zip? Probably nothing  But I may be wrong of course...

EDIT: I can tell the difference between WinRAR and 7-Zip ... 7-Zip can't open files inside the archive for me, while WinRAR can run and open files from within the archive.

Well it speaks for itself. You cannot say it has more differences but you may say that winzip is expert in .zip and winrar is expert in .rar. Both can do both properly if my knowledge is concerned. But for me I will always be on 7zip.

u can open ZIP files with windows (without third party programs);)

That's 1 of the big difference.. if you want to open .rar files etc.. you'll need WinRar.. if you want to open .zip files.. Windows can extract it.

You don't need WinRAR exclusively for rar files. Almost any third party app can do it (7zip, winrar, winzip etc.)

Btw, looking at the tables silencer gave, I'd say the best is going to be decided between WinRAR and 7-Zip. 7z can compress into a few more formats, but WinRAR can read some more formats. WRAR also has more features.

It all comes down to taste... for example if you need to compress gzip archives, then you need 7-Zip. If you want to read ACE files, then you need WRAR.

therefore Winrar wins the race my friend.By far the most widely used.

If u want better compression u can try StuffIt2009.its osum.

zip files can be opened by windows itself.. no need for programs.. I'm talking about, IF you don't have third party programs @ ur pc..

I agree with you manpe and Haantjuh. As far as windows is concerned, after downloadin a third party, people completely forget about it.

I'm talking about rars... you said you need WRAR to open rar files. I said you don't need WRAR, you can have it because most of the other programs can open it too (winzip, 7-zip etc.)

I know the fact that windows can open zip files.

Yeah so does the full version of WinZip 12.. I never actually got WinZip 12.. I used WinRAR, and 7-Zip, because I had of archives and files created by other people.. and they usually do the trick.. I have seen 7-Zip compress somethings much smaller that WinRAR, and WinZip.. as far as the compression engine is concerned I am not sure, one of the 1's and 0's guy needs to answer that part..LOL.. BUT I also got PowerArchiver fro this site and it has a nice GUI worked into Office 07.. and seems to handle quite a wide range of file types....but I think that it interferes with the normal operation of WinRAR.. but I could be wrong..

7zip and Winzip can also make files encrypted, they can also split in to 100, 100 each or similar.

7zip can do extreme compression. I would say it is the best compressor after KGB Archiver.

For the people who don't know what is KGB Archiver, it can compress a file to it's extreme, it can take hours to compression/decompression. I have seen files that are compressed from 1-2GB to about 50-100 MB or even more less.

I used FreeArc to RIP 1 game... "Brothers In Arms Hells Highway". The original ISO is 6.2 GB, then i installed the game and for some reson (i must be drunk or something) i deleted the ISO. I compressed the installed folder to 4.2 GB and make some REG files to do an unattended an compressed install.

Fits on a DVD :pirate:
