Local media carried reports that some of them were trapped on the roof of the building as 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters tackled the blaze.

The London Fire Brigade said two people received treatment for smoke inhalation whilst city police said that a number of people were being treated for various injuries.

Specialist medical teams were also called into to deal with fire related injuries.

Police have set up a wide cordon around Grenfell Tower, which was built in 1974, as they fear it could collapse.

Many residents who gathered outside the smoldering ruins of the building said the fire had been caused by a faulty fridge in one of the flats, but the fire service told MailOnline it could not confirm the reports at this stage

Awful, 17 dead and the number will rise..This is a disgrace and bought about  by lack of finance..The officials who authorised this so called "improvement" must be identified and pay with long prison sentences.

Grenfell Tower fire: This is what you can do to help:

A Refusal To Mourn The Death, By Fire, Of A Child In London - by Dylan Thomas:

Never until the mankind making
Bird beast and flower
Fathering and all humbling darkness
Tells with silence the last light breaking
And the still hour
Is come of the sea tumbling in harness

And I must enter again the round
Zion of the water bead
And the synagogue of the ear of corn
Shall I let pray the shadow of a sound
Or sow my salt seed
In the least valley of sackcloth to mourn

The majesty and burning of the child's death.
I shall not murder
The mankind of her going with a grave truth
Nor blaspheme down the stations of the breath
With any further
Elegy of innocence and youth.

Deep with the first dead lies London's daughter,
Robed in the long friends,
The grains beyond age, the dark veins of her mother,
Secret by the unmourning water
Of the riding Thames.
After the first death, there is no other.

Spoiler

Experts have said a blaze like this in a tower block was 'a disaster waiting to happen
Pictured: The new plastic cladding hangs charred and melted underneath the windows of the Grenfell tower in west London

Firefighters continue to battle large scale blaze in London tower block more than 14 hours after it broke out on the fourth floorPictured: Smoke billows from the smoldering skeleton of the Grenfell building in west London, after a devastating blaze ripped through the 27-storey tower block at 1am today

Police would not confirm how many people are unaccounted for because the building is still on fire 14 hours after it started (pictured this morning) - 12 are known to be dead but the death toll is likely to be significantly much higher

The blaze has been described as a once in a generation disaster and could prove to one of the worst disasters Britain has seen in recent years

There are real fears that that nobody who lived on the top three residential floors may have survived the unprecedented fire

A brave firefighter is pictured inside the burnt remains of the 27-storey building, as efforts are made to investigate what caused the blaze

This aerial photo taken hours after the fire ripped through the tower block shows the devastating scale of the inferno

When 17 people die by terror, the screaming is great, if there are other reasons, there are hardly any consequences.

Actually its LONDON again.. guess they can't get a break.. what with 3 attacks by muslims..was it 3... the single muslim stabbing the PC outside, the 3 armed muslims stabbing and killing at will, oh and another one which was stopped before it started, one muslim who got flattened before trying to get on a bus, and now this.. I'm just waiting for the truth about how it started.. i have my idea of HOW and WHO... but so far someone's said it was a fridge exploding??? I've never heard of that ever happening before, but i guess its possible.. but still not what I think happened, but will see.. I'm not posting what i think started it, in case my idea was correct.

Possible, refrigerators contain compressors, and it would be possible for it to explode because of high pressure, but this contains Freon (old fridges) or Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (new fridges), which doesn't burn.  Though an electrical short in the compressor pump would be able to cause a fire if there were surrounding combustible materials.  So, possible yes.  But there would be early signs of the fire if the occupant were home, such as a burning odor, then later visible smoke, and finally flames.  And even then there would have been early signs in neighboring apartments. It seems like it went up too fast and without any warning.

What happened to their sprinklers and smoke detectors?

It appears that the exterior of the building were flammable.

My sympathy to the victims and their families.

Information concerning construction from the BBC and Telegraph webpages.

The fire safety advice for Grenfell Tower residents was to "stay put" - unless the fire was affecting their own flat.

David Sibert, Fire Brigade Union fire safety expert, said: "The principle that tower blocks are built on is that every flat is a fire-resisting box - every flat is completely surrounded by fire-resisting construction from the rest of the building.

"So you should be able to set fire to your own flat and leave it to completely burn out and it won't affect anybody else in the building."

Experts said the fire spread at unusual speed and raised concerns whether the cladding may have contributed to this. The tower, which was built in 1974, recently underwent a major refurbishment.

It also emerged the cladding used in Grenfell Tower was behind a rapidly spreading blaze at a tower block in Melbourne in 2014. An eighth-floor fire raced up 13 floors to the roof of the 21-storey building in 11 minutes. The spread was “directly associated” with the external cladding, said the fire brigade.

That is the really worrying thing, lets suppose it was a kitchen fire of some sort, how on earth can that lead to a 24 storey block of flats (apartments in USA) be completely engulfed from the ground floor to the 24th floor in 30 mins!...There is something VERY wrong with building regulations and its clearly a disaster waiting to happen again in other so called renovated blocks.

Just look at that, first the government tries to hide and show the victims are a lot less than the real number, then we see most of these are Muslims. I can recognize some Persian words as well.

what was the cause anyway?

wasn't it a terrorist attack done by Christians in a stupid retaliation to recent UK attacks done by terrorists?

plot thickens
