In Outlook 2013, there are many messages. The PST file has the big size about 10 gigabytes. Couple of days ago Outlook gave the following message: This Outlook file is not a personal folders file. Now I don't know how to be and I need to repair 10Gb PST file.

10GB pst file is not big enough. In old days Outlook support upto 2GB but know it's 30GB and 50GB single pst file. I have three accounts, one has 45GB, second one is 30GB and the third one is o 8GB.

There are lots of third party apps to repair pst file but top of the most is Microsoft's scanpst.exe.

You can find it under Outlook folder. (Normally is c:\program files\microsoft office\office13 or office16)

You should need 10GB more space, cause scanpst.exe make a copy of your original pst file and than repair it. Repairing pst take times and depends upon system configuration. Sometime it take 3 to nine (or more) hours. Depends upon the no of mails and damages.

  • .pst file (Personal Storage Table) is Microsoft Oulook archive file;
  • this file can be used only by Microsoft  Outlook;
  • this file normal size is 2GB or less, if it is larger, it is probably damaged and not usable;
  • this file contains old Microsoft Oulook data like old emails copies, old contacts copies etc.
  • this file is not mandatory and can be disabled, delete or moved. If it is not disabled, Microsoft Outlook will make new, if You move it to another place or delete it.
  • Usually this file is absolutely useless, because it contains only obsolete data, but if You think it is  useful for You, move it to other place where is Your archive.

  Google Search helps You, if needed.

First of all I have never seen that error message in Outlook, ever, and that covers the last 15 years of using Outlook.  That appears more like something your system administrator would send out.  The use of Outlook for file storage is a bad habit but is wide spread among organizations that don't take the initiative to reduce it.  Until we decreased the size of our mailboxes for all our users, they were using Outlook as a personal folders file to store documents.  Once we forced local archives and a mailbox size of 600MB those bad habits ceased.  I don't think anything is wrong with your PST file.  If there is then I wouldn't use scanpst on it since that is basically useless and only fixes very minor problems.  A much better tool to use is Kernel Recovery for PST which has the additional benefit of allowing you to divide a large PST file into smaller sized files.

PST is probably the worst file format known to man, and ive death with it since the beginning

As menionted Microsoft wouldnt even talk to you in the old days if it was over 2Gb

I wont talk to you now if its thats size

Worst file format ever...even if you delete messages the file size doesnt decrease for one....

If you manage to fix it to where you can load it using one of the suggested tools, i would then create a new blank PST file and drag any messages you need to this new file and then save it, would then also back it up. I have no doubt it will orders of magnitude smaller....

Dear @Kalju and @stylemessiah

I am not criticizing you, Just update yourself.

PST file is necessary to store Microsoft Outlook data. This file is not store obsolete data, if you delete it you will lost all your download emails. The file limit is not 2GB anymore.

Here are some reference to read.

I am using and maintaining Microsoft Outlook more than 16 years on different PCs and laptops and for individuals it is good enough.

For simple repairing I always use scanpst but for recovery mails from damaged PST file or reading emails/extracting attachments directly from PST I am using different softwares

the question whas how to repair the pst file.

then only a good answer whas needed

So

just use scanpst.exe

ScanPST in Outlook 2013 x32
Windows x32 C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15
Windows x64 C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15
ScanPST in Outlook 2013 x64
Windows x64 C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15
ScanPST in Outlook 2013 “Click to Run”

For Office 2013 installed using the “Click to Run” system, you need to check the root\Office15 folder found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\

I don’t know the reasons of your problem. But usually scanpst help, if not make use https://recoverytoolbox.com/faq-outlook-repair-big-pst-file.html – it is only appropriate variant…

Or another variant https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Recover-deleted-items-in-Outlook-for-Windows-49e81f3c-c8f4-4426-a0b9-c0fd751d48c
