Defencewall Hips and Sandboxie

hey guys

i wanted to ask if we should use sandboxie and DW Hips together, actually i m using them

together right now.But my question is do they do the same things,DW runs apps in untrustes

and so does sandboxie if asked.

So should i use them together or just use DW Hips,no need of sandboxie???

i m thinking of deploying Zone Alarm pro as the firewall, does it work fine with DW Hips,or will i have to turn off HIPS in Zone Alarm if it has one???

Do I leave DWHips on it default setting...

hi karachidude

from my deep experience with both of them , go for SB (sandboxie) which provide better secuirty than DW(defensewall)

if you like them both and want to use them , make DW "trust" your browser(firefox,iexplorer...etc) and set it to protect SB folder only as "untrsuted " (c:\sandboxie)

it this method what ever jump out SB will caught by DW .;)

cheers

Sandboxie is entirely different from HIPS. Think of Sandboxie as a virtual environment where you can run many programs. Any program that runs in Sandboxie can READ all the data that is stored on your computer (unless you tweak the settings). It will WRITE changes only when you give it permission. DW is a real-time. Both are useful and have their purposes.

excuse my ignorace

should i run and install all applications and keygens etc using the sandboxie.

will the installation run like normal when on Sandboxie and get installed so that i can use it.And

if theres a malware in the keygen it would tell me and terminate the installation rite??

Any installation run through sandboxie is like a normal installation or execution but in a protected environment????

You should run all questionable programs in Sandboxie first while still using AV, Firewall, and HIPS.

I run all keygens in Sandboxie. Get the keys then delete all the contents in the sandbox. Everything that runs in Sandboxie is {Write} protected. (It writes in a fake area that doesn't affect Windows or your computer.) But Sandboxie is not an anti-malware program, so any program that runs in Sandboxie can {Read} data on your computer, such as keyloggers.

Worst case scenario:

You run a keygen in Sandboxie that contained a keylogger. The keygen runs in Sandboxie and you did not terminate it. While the keygen is running, the keylogger is collecting your data and phoning home. The keylogger is also inviting all his friends to join your computer. While the keylogger is running in Sandboxie, it is running as normal. You are SOL.

Better scenario:

You run a keygen in Sandboxie that contained a keylogger. The keygen runs in Sandboxie and you did not terminate it. Your AV determines that it is a keylogger and deletes it. Before the AV has a chance to delete it, the keylogger has several of his friends over already. When you terminate and delete the sandbox, the keylogger and all his friends die. No harm, no foul except for the data that the keylogger phoned home while it was running.

So, you still need a good firewall, AV, HIPS, and Sandboxie. Just remember, when it comes to security, Layered protection is a must.

Whatever you do, do not use Zone Alarm firewall. It hogs too many resources in my opinion and isn't very good. I think most people say Comodo has great HIPS protection in their firewall so you could give that a try instead.

Yea comodo is great. Fast enough on my 3-4 year old PC. As far as Zonealarm Firewall is concerned, never, I said never use it. Zonealarm and AVG AV will make you PC slow than a turtle.

If you have a fast PC, the engineers I have met always told me that Norton or McAfee are the better ones if you have a fast PC.

Core 2 Duo? Yea RAM is a bit less for NORTON. But I myself feel that ESET is best allround.

Blaming ESET for allowing the virus? That's like blaming the hammer for putting the nail in wrong :P

Seriously, you shouldn't get mad after one infection. There is no such thing as the 'perfect' AV so when you do decide to switch AV's, download the virus again. Chances are that your new AV will allow it also.

You have to stay on your toes when dealing with warez. Had you run whatever had the virus in it sandboxed you wouldn't be getting angry at ESET ;)

As Box said, SB & DW are two separate things. I recommend that you download Boxie & stick with that. The HIPS in Comodo should do the trick for you.

I wish I could find a key for Online Armor's Pro suite. I wanna see how good that is...

:lmao: Are you mad because I'm defending an antivirus program? Wow Kdude I didn't expect this from you.

I need you to get one thing straight: I don't care what AV you use. You can't blame it for a mistake that you made yourself. Being more careful isn't something an AV can do for you. Only you can do that yourself.

Had you said Avira or KIS I would've said the same exact thing to you. It doesn't matter.

Don't ever label me as a fanboy or whatever because I don't just follow trends. I do things myself.

Get it? Got it? Good.

 Cheers...

Well it is very much better that ESET Smart Security. My experience. But if you try comodo you should be ready for a bit of allow/deny naggin. ANW you can also keep it in safe made and not have this naggin. ;)

General rule(made up by me): standalone packages tend to do better than 'All-In-One solutions'. ESET is quite new to the firewall thing whilst COMODO has been a respectable name for some time. I just like the way COMODO works better, it's interface is more friendly for me to use, in the beginning you have some nagging but it'll eventually get in a 'steady state' where it'll only ask you for new programs...

It has some more advanced features than ESET does but I don't use most of them.

As far as I can see it nags me more than three times when I install a program. And I install atleast 2 software a day so....

Well I have a habit of it as I had ZoneAlarm for 1-2 years and it doesn't trouble me. But as I said people who don't like that and dont have any troubled internet usage may try it's safe mode.

i mearly stated that i googled and realized Norton was the Top Notch.I was not defending myself...but comparing two different products...

3)If ur not a ESET fan,gud for u...lol...i regret the pain and suffering i caused by calling u a ESET fan.. :D...fantastic that u do thing urself...lol...
