What is a rar file and how do I open a rar file?

The numerous files that are compressed with RAR compression are known as RAR files or WinRAR Compressed Archive. Compared to the usual ZIP compression, RAR compression has a much higher compression ratio which is why RAR files are more preferred. RAR files are known to include proprietary compression algorithm and other compressors use this algorithm already such as the 7zip. This is the reason why a variety of programs can already be used to extract these files especially in a Windows environment. RAR compressors are also known for the creation of multi-volume archives. These are split into multiple files so that they can be transferred to multiple disks. These split file archives use the file extension R followed by the digit that corresponds the part of the split archive; for instance R00-R99 by which the standard version is simply .RAR. Since RAR file extension was developed by Eugene Roshal, it actually stands for "Roshal Archive”.

My bad, I don't complete reading op post .rar not .zip :D

As for decompressing there are very many good (even better ) ones! ;)

OP, I reckon is going to have to apologize to WinRar... "kiss and make up"... maybe "make the plans for the future"... :D

Error0101

You do not need another archiver. You can easily edit your Winrar context menu. Open Winrar. Choose Options --> Settings. Then, choose Integration tab, choose Context menu items

In there, you can easily edit your context menu exactly what you want

I did a little research and it cant be done.

"Consequently, due to RAR's license constrains, no free software can be written to be natively capable of writing RAR archives (which is required both for RAR archive creation, update and repairing), unless calling Windows-only WinRar's executables (i.e. rar.exe), that requires having WinRar (shareware, free for 40 days only) downloaded and installed as a separate product. Please note that WinRar license's time trial legal limitations apply to any part of the package (as i.e. rar.exe) as well, even if it does not display the warning screen as the main WinRar's GUI executable."

How about letting the developer know about it. Click on the link of the WinRAR and RAR bug reports thing. I have heard the developer is friendly and probably does not really care for license and such.

Instead of resorting to the long-winded right-clicking, you might want to use the more convenient F2 (after selecting the folder/file) for your renaming purpose.

If F2 works (without crashing,) you may not need to remove the WinRAR context menu — "have your cake and eat it, too." ;)

Never had the problem the OP has, but then again its NOT a problem with Winrar but Windows 10.

if the problem is file explorer or windows explorer, then instead of using windows explorer use a different app.

See if the problem exist if for instance your using XYPlorer etc...

Another good reason not to use Win10 in my books.
