Yes, I have a desktop with windows 98 that I built in 1999 and it has games on it I like to play.  Last month I threw away a Dell Inspiron 3000 Laptop from 1997 that was running Windows 95 and some special software that would only run on it.  Once I no longer needed the software I destroyed the hard drive and ram and threw the system away.  But it still worked without a problem and there was no problem with any of the hardware including the internal PCMCIA slot which still had a Xircom combo card for modem and ethernet.

LoL - I just threw out my #5 box - a Dell 'something or other' with Win98SE still installed (actually I removed the 14GB Baracuda (?) HDD and Ram) - my first Desktop C~2,000 :)

The question if can a Windows 98 computer be used in 2017, obviosly with Windows 98 (or rather Windows 98SE), is hypotetic. It's quite probable that Windows 2000 and crappy WindowsME will run too on this computer.

Had I a really good computer form early 2000, with Pentium 3, actually I would go for installing 512 Mb RAM, if the board supports them. I believe they used SD Ram and it should not be a problem to get 2 x 256 Mb.

so, if the computer has a HDD of at least 20 Mb and 512 Mb RAM, it might be enough to run Windows XP and shouldn't bother with Windows 98. Of course, the tricky question is "to use Windows 98".

The problem to run a more advanced Windows, XP in this case, might be getting the drivers; some simply are not available, or even inexistent.

Now, if you want to run Windows 98, might use a "current" computer. I understand that Windows 9x does not support Hyperthreading or Multi Core/Processors, but probably you can disable it anyway.  I really wouldn't know how, it's just an idea. Must recognize that I stopped using Windows 98SE back in 2001 and never again tried to install one. I understand that the best way should be installing Windows 98 with VMware..
