luisam Posted February 21, 2017 Share Posted February 21, 2017 Probaly most of rock fans know about The Twist and the King of The Twist, Chubby Checker; his first version of The Twist was recorded in 1960 and reached Nº 1on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960. Later, on January 1962, topped the popular hit parade again for two weeks starting a record as the only song to reach number 1 in two different hit parade runs. Still later, in1988, "The Twist" again became popular due to a new recording of the song by "The Fat Boys" featuring Chubby Checker, reaching number 2 in the UK and top position around the world. The little known fact is that the original version of The Twist was released on 1959 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters as a B-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter". Ballard's version was a moderate 1960 hit, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. Midnighters' member Lawson Smith recalled that the song was originally written by Nathaniel Bills, of a gospel group called "The Sensational Nightingales" years before. My personal opinion is thet the big diiference between Hank Ballard and Chubby Checker was set by the actual dancing steps of twisting and the image of Chubby Checker doing "the move".
