Is it even possible now to install FF unsigned XPI's? I have many of them and it seems install is not possible now. Would be glad to find any strategies for that...

Try this, don't know if it works no more or not.

Firefox. if some extensions is not enabled.

1. open Firefox
2. about:config => ENTER => I accept the risk
3. Search:  xpinstall.signatures.required
4. change true => false
5. Restart Firefox

I added later:

Forgot to say that usually is needed to add current version to install.rdf file.
There may be needed to open extensionname.xpi file before Yoy can change and then made new extensionname.xpi file and use it.
If You don't know, then .xpi is Firefox special compressed file.

It's been confirmed that this works a number of times. I myself am using this "trick" to run some old addons and I'm running latest FF version.

A note for all who encountered problems using the method described, like the user who encountered the error message saying "Configuration Error", "Failed to read the configuration file. Please contact your system administrator":

Make sure the files config.js and config-prefs.js EXACTLY and ONLY contain the contents as described in the instructions (including the comment lines of the code snippets). Do *not* add own comments and so on to these files. I added own C-style comments to the files and wondered why I didn't work. Actually everything works now.. You must follow the instructions precisely (also regarding the paths... they refer to the installation directory and not to your profile directory).

Then it worked fine for me (Firefox 50.0.2; 32bit; Win 7)

Good, if works. Like I said, I have not tried it, and probably never will not begin to try. There is no need to use not compatible and out of date widgets.

Use only know extensions and addons and as few as possible. It is my recommendation.

And as you probably have noticed, the latest stable Firefox was 48.0.2. All after that  have been only some of semi-working tests.

It seems that Firefox is once again in a strong development crisis. They trying and trying, but nothing seems not work.
