Download this portable program and scan the disk you want. You will see the lost file. Select them then recover.

Edit: After first and fast scan pay attention to warning screen. If you press "ok" then it starts deep scan, you can use this option when you couldn't find the file you want at the very first scan.

Try to filter the list to the extensions of the files after the deep scan of whatever software you're using and look for recent files, sometimes when due to formatting the software doesnt shows files by their actual names cos they've overwritten by new data and shows names with gibberish text like they you see with encrypted files e.g. $$$Ashjahfuejf.docx or $$auiore7489fds.pdf ; hope you got the gist . Altho, not a full proof way but you can try recovering these (if they can be) then check if they are intact !!

Try to recover whatever the deep scan found but to a different drive.  They may be your documents in fragments or could be your documents but not in any specific document format.  In forensics a lot of the data recovered initially looks like gibberish but the article contents can be manually extracted from the machine code symbols that are interspersed in the data recovered.  So you won't necessarily see a 'My Word Document.docx' or 'My PDF File.pdf' as they originally looked or were named.

I once been in the same situation and PhotoRec really helped me out, it will recover the data but not the folder structure so be ready to open whichever files it throws at you, best of luck.
